Me and a few friends are gonna start up playing pretty soon.

What/who are the top of the line guns? where is a good place to shop online for this stuff? what all safety equipment do i need? should i put my balls in the freezer?

I'd like to read reviews on the equipment but any opinions on this site from long time paint ballers will be just as good.

Don't freeze painballs. The shells will get brittle and they're break. Keep them somewhere cool in a sealed container and turn them weekly.

IMO, the Angel made by WDP is still the most uber paint flinging death machine conceived by modern engineering.

i got a tippman custom 98 from dick's.. great starter gun... you should get at least 2-3 tanks to keep filled when you go play... in case you run out or all the co2 is ejected during a misfire or something..

as far as uniform, i just went to army surplus store and got some old camo...

the kit i got at dick's came with a face mask...

there it is.. i bought an extra tank also

^^ i've always thought of the angels as overrated, and this is coming from a former gun tech. I was actually always partial to AKAs markers, never had an excalibur or viking that didn't shoot ropes. But to be honest, in todays market most people are going with ions or other similar now very affordable electro-pneumatics in that single tube style. slim profile, light, reliable, and a big plus CHEAP. I've owned guns worth 1,500 and markers that cost 50, as long as you take good care of it, match your paint to barrel, and keep use good quality paint if you don't need to shoot 15bps a cheap gun will work just fine.

btw, the only marker I currently own anymore is a phantom pump. It'll never break and always shoots great.

The Tipman Model 98 is a fantastic gun and relatively cheap.
I recommend a 20 oz and 9/12oz tank.
BDUs make great clothes to wear.
A good face mask is worth the money.
There is an paintball club at NCSU.

uss is right. no reason to get a tippman for like 100-150 bucks when you can buy an ion for 200. its pretty sweet for a starter gun and can shoot ropes. now if you arent going to take care of it or are playing in some real shit, then maybe the tippman is the way to go.

if you actually want to jump in for a gun that is semi-cheap, top of the line performance, and easy to maintain, you cannot go wrong with a Cyborg. Try to find one of the old 04 ones. probably get one under 3-4 hundred (i havent looked in a couple years but they were at 400 or so when i quit).

those are 5+ years old now, but are just as fast as the newer guns, super reliable and easy maintain. basically very similar to the AKA guns that ussjbroli mentioned, but not nearly as heavy (for a stock one).

Oh, and Ion's are great guns for starters. You put a few upgrades on it and it's really good.

I have had LOTS of mech guns. However the only ones I still own are all Tippman products. If you want full auto and other settings for scenario or woodsball, or even for you outlaw games, get a Tippman A5, or a 98C+ cyclone feeder, and add a RT kit, or an E-Trigger.

i never liked the angel....well i liked it for long enough to own one. then i realized it wasn't that great.

i quit playing paintball in high school but my two favorite guns back then were the shocker (the giant freaking brick edition, who knows what they have now) and the matrix.

the matrix was actually a really good design. i wonder if they still make it.

i took my autococker front end off and turned it into a sniper 2. that was a fun gun as well.

if i ever play again i'm rockin a phantom. pump gun or bust. its like getting a knife kill in a video game. sure you get your ass beat all day but that one moment is worth it. that and i never want to afford speed ball again (sorry mom).

^^ they still make the matrix and it become one of the most popular guns on the market. the newer slimer shocker uses a very similar design in fact.

if my brother didn't pawn it while home for school breaks i have serial number 50-70 I believe.

i took it to the place in greensboro (paintball central?) to get a part for it and they were interrogating me about how I even got it. apparently they were really heavy into them and didn't even have them for their team yet.

^ they eventually became the matrix center actually. As far as trixes go, I used to own one of the Ironman Squid trixes, and had several tequilas as well. I should have held onto those as they are collectors Items now since only 15 of the squides were made and less than a hundred of the tequilas. Dye bought the trix design and now pretty much every compact marker uses that single tube bolt design.

god that's the truth. I'm still pissed at myself for how much money I wasted on paintball the summer after my junior year in high school.

you should look into playing airsoft as well. Lots of fun and far fewer hotshot kids.
