Well folks it has officially begun. The problem is a simple one (water!) with a complicated cause (years of neglect!) but I aim to fix it once and for all.
Hypothetically speaking of course, will a Ditch Witch cut through 5in diameter roots? 2/3/2009 8:39:38 AM |

yes it will, hell just rent a kubota backhoe loader and rip that shit up, be careful though, the ditch is a public utility/ infrastructure, there can be some big fines if you dont get a permit, fyi 2/3/2009 8:54:47 AM |

Town says fill it all in, water will go to the lowest point. State (DWQ) told me that it is my responsibility to maintain it and to come to him for permits. Army Core of Engineers agrees. I am all set to fix this thing the right way but need to know how I am gonna do it so I can clear it through DWQ. Big Kubota likely weighs too much for the existing yard area. I have enough cleared out now to get a Ditch Witch and maybe a mini excavator to the problem areas on the other side of the false creek in the yard but working like an amigo has destroyed my back. 2/3/2009 9:09:30 AM |

So it is looking like trencher to cut a new ditch for proper drainage, then the mini-ex to dig it out. HMMM 2/3/2009 11:45:33 AM |

Quote : | "The Town’s contracted waste collector will collect limbs placed at curbside, but the limbs must be no greater than four inches in diameter and no longer than six feet in length. Limbs should be stacked neatly behind the curb or sidewalk with cut ends towards the street. A maximum of seven cubic yards of limbs may be placed curbside for collection at any one time." |
HA! At least twice that already at the street.

you know i've got the trackhoe/mini ex covered no problem. i can run a ditch witch like the wind blows too, and can get you a decent rate on a rental through the company.
oh, and yes, i can confirm that a ride on ditch witch will put a hurtin on 5" diameter roots. 2/3/2009 3:26:48 PM |

are you in the Neuse River Basin? what kind of stream is it? is it a ditch with stream like properties? does it appear on a USGS map or a county soil survey? Was it a stream that was straightened back in the day? I used to consult on this stuff and it can get hairy. Martin Richmond with DWQ is pretty chill, if you are dealing with cary they have some real gems on staff. 2/3/2009 11:02:48 PM |

its actually a pretty big issue and yes, martin richmond does know about it and has been out to the house, along with corps of engineers. the previous owners messed it all up and now we're having to go back and fix it and we want to make sure we're doing it through the proper channels. the issue now is what we can and can't do to fix it. 2/4/2009 7:57:37 AM |
