I got a bottle busted over my head a few months ago and the broken bottle came down and cut my arm.I never got stitches and now the scar is a few mm's high, and half a cm wide and pink.Has anyone tried silicon scar sheets and if so which is the best, also do they work better than the silicone scar gel?

The plastic surgeon at Duke has his patients use massage and a silicon scar gel to reduce the thickness and appearance of surgical scars. The brand that he recommends is Kelo-cote. We've used it on Silas's lip and it has done a wonderful job.

find a plastic surgeon, get a scar revision, and start over from scratch

I've been wearing these sheets for half a week now but you'll need some good tape to keep them on, we'll see how it does. The scar has already turned more purple in some parts and a lighter pink in other parts before I started using the sheets.

my sister had a plate put in her arm and it left a huge frankenstein scar. she used this cream called Mederma and it seemed to help.[Edited on February 14, 2009 at 11:38 PM. Reason : .l]

merderma is vasaline with onion powder. you can make it yourself.
2/14/2009 11:46:34 PM
well mix some up and smear it on, groundbeef

1) wear sunscreen on that scar2) just use vitamin E + timeI know about scars And omg, all my scars turn purple, too. Drives me crazy. If I get an ingrown hair, that turns purple.

I'll try if these sheets don't work, sheets are supposed to work better on raised scars and the color will probably dissipate on its own. A lot of creams are used on fresh scars though but I won't rule them out.
2/14/2009 11:51:15 PM
yeah, my sis's was fresh. she started putting the mederma on as soon as they took out the staples
2/14/2009 11:52:53 PM
yours may be different, but when i had me neck surgery i learned that my insurance covers scar revisions on or around the face. i never got one because the doctor did a pretty good job, but there is one little spot i may get taken care of.also, i think all of those products are designed to fix coloration problems, not make them flatter. i had to massage my scar everyday after my surgery to keep it flat, but i don't know how effective that is on old scars that are already raised.

These sheets aren't doing much but its only been around 2 weeks.

I had a TON of glass cuts and some huge nasty stitches from a car accident in HS, started putting mederma on immediately and I have very little scaring besides some of the worst areas you can see stuff if you know its there. but I started putting it on right away, not sure about a few months after the fact

Shit didn't do anything, I'm going to have to go sign up for some surgery somewhere based on my income of 0 so maybe it will be cheap

Had it removed today. Surgeon said it was keloid. My arm is still numb and there is quite a bit of blood still oozing out of the stitched cut. 7 stitches.

I had pretty significant foot surgery about 8 months ago and I used the silicone scar sheets + maderma (a little pricey but works very well) + Palmers cocoa butter.I'll try and find the brand name and PM you.Oh yeah... and the scar is hardly visible.[Edited on April 1, 2009 at 9:03 AM. Reason : .]

when someone gets a bottle busted over their head one of the two parties was being a deusche bag. if it was you then use that scar as a reminder to not be one ever again.
4/1/2009 9:22:30 AM
deusche bag.
4/1/2009 9:24:52 AM
haha, you like that?

i had my sternum cut in half in 2005 to remove my thymus gland. the incision is the same one for open heart surgery (if you know what that looks like). i have keloid scarring on the top half of it, esp at the very top. i've tried the silicone sheets and it irritated my skin a lot. you're supposed to pull them off at certain intervals and that always hurt. i never made it past a week.if it's only been a few months, your scar will definitely improve by itself if you give it more time. mine is almost 4 years old and is still improving.[Edited on April 1, 2009 at 9:42 AM. 4/1/2009 9:41:26 AM
you really went through that just to have a little keloid removed?
4/1/2009 10:17:22 AM
^were you referring to my post?if so,went through all what? i didn't have a keloid removed. i still have it. it was the result of a trans-sternal thymectomy (removal of the THYMUS GLAND). the only thing i've done for the keloid was try the silicone scar sheets which weren't going to work for me...reading comprehension ftw
4/1/2009 10:30:59 AM
^not you, GroundBeefyou have a big real scar.his scar wasn't even half a cm wide.
4/1/2009 10:33:08 AM
Mine was half a centimeter wide, an inch long, bright pink, and it wasn't a scar. It was a keloid which means it was a huge bump. I have a little piece of string hanging out of the cut now, is that normal? I read somewhere it will dissolve in a month but other times its an accident and could cause infection. Why do they even put it there?
4/4/2009 5:07:13 PM
Neosporin Scar Patches and a little bit of liquid vitamin E has helped with both the scar on my ankle and abdomen.
4/4/2009 5:19:01 PM
ScarZone (I bought it at CVS, i'm sure others like RiteAid, Walgreens, etc. carry it) is a cream that comes in a tube and works really well.
4/4/2009 5:21:18 PM
^^^ could that string be part of the stitches? if so, it'll probably just pull out when you remove the stitches.
4/4/2009 5:25:58 PM
I don't think so. The stitches are rubber and black and this string is thicker, a fiber, and white. Also heard that is the case for the stitches that come out on their own. These are going to be removed by the doctor.
4/4/2009 5:39:13 PM
oh. i don't know much about that then.i've always taken my stitches out myself though. but if you're not getting charged, might as well have the doc do it.
4/4/2009 5:41:38 PM
If the wound was closed in two layers, the string is likely part of the inner layer that will dissolve. We've seen quite a bit of stitches in my household. Leave it alone. I pulled on my son's thinking that it was some kind of debris and he cried.
