So WRAL apparently wants you to think:

"Teen says cervical cancer vaccine made her ill

CANTON, N.C. — In high school track and field, Holly Runstrom was one of the best athletes in the state. The mile, the 4 x 800 relay – she was a star.

"Track is my life," Runstrom said. "I love it. It's what I do."

Tonight at 6: Is the Gardasil vaccine safe?

Runstrom's life took a dramatic turn last May, within days of taking Gardasil, a vaccine for girls and women ages 9 to 26 to help protect against the virus that causes cervical cancer.

The Canton teen says she was in the hospital and mysteriously ill.

"She couldn't breathe. She was real fatigued," her mother, Marian Greene, said. "Her chest was beginning to hurt like she was having an allergy or asthma attack."

Two months after the symptoms started, doctors diagnosed Runstrom with mononucleosis. Runstrom says she is still too weak to run.

Her family thinks Gardasil is responsible. Doctors do not know if her condition is related to the vaccine or if it is a coincidence.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which monitors reports like Runstrom's, however, says there is no evidence that the vaccine causes any serious side effects."

I never watched the story on last night's news, but it seemed like it was going to be much more sinister. Like she took the vaccine and got AIDS.

Is mono even really a "serious side effect"?

mono is not fun and it's a major hassle, but it's not a side effect at all.

Basically sounds like a teenage girl didn't want to tell the truth about her kissing half the school. So she blamed in her gardasil.

so what? what if there was a link? i would take a case of mono for the benefits of reduced risk of getting hpv and cervical cancer.

rjrgrl, and others:

The focus of the thread is not at all about the vaccine.

It's about WRAL's inability to discern between coincidence and causation.

Or better yet, "I had the hiccups, and my gramma called. When I got off the phone with her, I didn't have the hiccups anymore! I'm calling her next time I get the hiccups"

The same people would still be getting it, and the same people would still be saying 'I'm not giving my daughter a whore's vaccine'
