looks to me like a bunch of people are looking for racism where it was clearly never intended. you'd think they would have something better to do with their time.

I think what he's saying in his own cryptic way is that the best time to make this thread would have been last week.

I'll play along tho. I sincerely doubt the cartoonist was advocating assassination of Obama. He was trying to draw a parallel between the chimp incident and the stimulus. But he failed miserably. And no one at the Post had any common sense to say "Hey, this may look bad."

I don't really get the comic to be honest. Then again I haven't paid much attention to the news the past week or two.

oh my fucking god.

black people are fucking seriously protesting this cartoon. From my interpretation i interpreted is implying the stimulus bill is so dumb a "monkey put it together" or that congress is "as dumb as monkies" jumping around spending money.

but NO

apparently black people think they look like monkeys since they took specific offense to this cartoon.
the NY Post must have some secret hidden agenda against black people.

I'm so damn tired of people taking shit out of context especially when it comes to racial issues. This shit was not racist until the NAACP made it so; just like the protest against those women wearing the hoop ball dresses in Alabama. OH LOOK SOUTHERN WHITE GIRLs SUPPORTING SLAVERY BY WEARING DRESSES THAT WOMEN WORE BEFORE SLAVERY ENDED eekk

Quote :

Quote from iReport from a confused African American in NYC who enjoys creating racist tension when there is none in order to get attention

Now that i think about it there were like a billion images of George Bush depicted as a monkey. Were these images somehow a reference saying Bush is like black people??? Maybe there is just a double standard. Even though the cartoon is not insinuating that the monkey is Obama, I assume the NAACP is assuming it does, so it is ok to characterize Bush as a monkey. Yet, if you characterize Obama this way it is racist....

Lets take the march to the street guys! Some black cartoonist is obviously racist and says white people are like monkies!

I think these protests and rallies spark as well as increase racism along with racial tension. So in effect these marches on "racial topics" just exasperate the problem.

Does nobody watch the news?

It was obvious what the comic was about if people had been paying attention the past week. (Here a hint, the comic has zero to do with obama or congress, perhaps there was an actual chimp shot this week by the police which made more news than obama's signing of the stim bill).

I am sure the protesters in this situation are not to keen on watching the news and thus would have no knowledge of the chimp incident.

Further i'm willing to wager most of them did not even read the NY Post that contained the cartoon. They just heard "yo homie, some cartoonist in tha paper be racist and called black people monkeys with the po po shootin one in a comic".

Obama really needs to speak up on this and say it doesn't mean shit. How's the NAACP going to whip up a firestorm when our african american president does not even consider the comic offensive or as being directed towards blacks.

first off HUR you're stupid. The answer to you question is obvious.

also the past means everything. We live in a world where 95% of the people on the planet worship things invented thousands of years ago and live in a country that swears by an old piece of paper.

You don't know that racism wasn't intended, unless you are the author/know the author personally. Considering the newspaper it was in, and the artist, it's not a stretch to think he was aiming for a more subtle meeting, like that cartoon a while back where the space between the frames was the "I."

But, it was clearly insensitive, and the publication has already apologized for this. It would be the same thing if you put a swastika in a cartoon in an ambiguous way. You don't think people would flip out about that?

White people as monkeys isn't a common stereotype used for white people. Something offensive to one person is different than something offensive to an entire group of people.

This cartoon reflects more on the wisdom of the editorial board than it does the cartoonist. If the editors of the NY Post didn't realize that this editorial cartoon could spark the controversy that it did, then perhaps they need some fresh blood. If they did realize that the cartoon would cause the controversy and decided to run with it anyways... well... that's an interesting issue in and of itself.

So which african american was being portrayed here? It sure as hell wasn't Obama as the chimp neither looks like him, nor was he the main author of the stimulus bill.

well, the chimp probably had more sense than the idiots who wrote the porkulus bill, so I guess it's accurate. No person was mentioned, and Obama surely didn't write the bill, he just attached his name to it and promoted it (which will bite him in the ass really hard). This is just race-baiting and grandstanding by Sharpton, and the folks in the media are contributing to it by giving the dumbass a platform to speak from.

Obama.

I'm not saying the author intended for it to be Obama.

but come on, who does the majority of the public look to when it comes to major legislation? The president of the united states of america.

The critics of this comic are almost certainly reaching when they make claims of racism.

Still, small wonder that newspapers are dying when their editors can't figure out that having a black man represented by a dead monkey is a bad idea.
