"Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban
The Ban Expired in 2004 During the Bush Administration.
By JASON RYAN
WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 2009

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

Wednesday Attorney General Eric Holder said that the Obama administration will seek to reinstitute the assault weapons ban which expired in 2004 during the Bush administration.
(AP Photos/ABC News Graphic )"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

The constant enactment, reversal, and re-enactment of partisan legislation as the administration changes from republican to dem to repub back again does not rub we well.

Like the funding for groups that spread information about abortion. Irrelevant of whether I like or dislike the legislation, I dislike the politicians for regularly undoing what the last one did.

I thought I remember him (or maybe Biden) saying specifically "we are not going to take your guns away" somewhere in Pennsylvania maybe? Not that it would be the first time a politician promised something during the campaign only to do something else.

The old assault weapons ban was on the short list of stupidest pieces of legislation that I've ever seen. Hopefully the Dems don't pass this.

Or maybe hopefully they do, and then they pay a big political price for it.

^^ Yeah, it is what I remember hearing too. But this article is about Eric Holder, I haven't heard this from Obama's mouth (yet).

"“If you’ve got a gun in your house, I’m not taking it,’’ Obama said. But the Illinois senator could still see skeptics in the crowd, particularly on the faces of several men at the back of the room.

So he tried again. “Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’’ he said. “This can’t be the reason not to vote for me. Can everyone hear me in the back? I see a couple of sportsmen back there. I’m not going to take away your guns.’’"

this does not indicate he's coming to take your guns. Just to restrict the sale of certain guns which have been restricted in the past.

True.

but that restriction was completely retarded. of all the dumb laws out there, we managed to get rid of one, and now they want to reinstate it? I thought this stupid issue was finally dead.

he may know all about this

but the fact remains that is feel-good legislation that will do nothing except get votes from people that dont know any better

it may be a good trump card for the mid term elections

Interesting:

Quote :
"Pelosi throws cold water on weapons ban

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tossed cold water on the prospect of reinstating the assault weapons ban, highlighting Democrats’ reluctance to take on gun issues.

Attorney General Eric Holder raised the prospect Wednesday that the administration would push to bring back the ban. But Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicated on Thursday that he never talked to her. The Speaker gave a flat “no” when asked if she had talked to administration officials about the ban.

“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “I think it's clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.”

Outside of the dig at the recent Republican president, that phrase is the stock line of those who don’t want to pass new gun control laws, such as the National Rifle Association.

The White House declined to comment on Holder's remarks, referring reporters to the Department of Justice. The DoJ did not respond to The Hill's request for comment. "

just curious here..... what exactly are you planning on using your AR15s that you need a stockpile of ammo for?

and don't get your panties in a wad - i'm not arguing your right to do so. just wondering why.

I'm specifically curious, though, as to why one must buy an AR15 in particular before they stop going on sale, if that actually happens.

people collect things all the time. some of you uber-nerds play WoW for hours on end.

to answer your curiosity, weapons like that are fun to shoot. they are all much different in what they do, especially compared to more standard guns. if you are into weaponry, they appeal to different actions. some are loud, some are more powerful, some are extremely accurate at long range, etc...

lol

and ive never played one minute of WOW.

look, im from johnston county ... i love to shoot guns too. i go camping, hiking, fishing and i used to go hunting. i still dont see a problem with banning the sale of assault rifles.

oh noes, you cant buy a gun that kill someone from 300 yards away...big deal

I own a shotgun. I personally dont care about assault rifles.

I do care that its just another stupid, silly, unnecessary obtrusion into our lives by the government. WHO GIVES A FUCK what people want them for?

what is your hobby? it can be marginalized just as easily.

alright, thanks.
that's a good enough answer, and it's actually a lot better than some bullshit "i want to protect my family" or "because it's ma' fuckin' right!" answer.

and believe it or not, i actually sympathize with it. I went to a gun club with my dad a couple months ago to shoot .22s and some shotguns, and one of his redneck buddies pulled up with his guns, including some crazy fucking machine-gun-looking thing that my dad and I both shot - and it was cool as shit.

don't know what it was, though - here is my dad shooting it (minus a face, because he's in that crazy older generation who doesn't like his picture pasted all over the web with every activity he does)

You can argue over the semantics, but it was pretty clear Obama played a bunch of people in regards to gun control. Not really surprising. Not really sure why a lot of leftists think that the country wants everything they do. They keep this up, and they won't even stay in power 4 years.

Though, I see Pelosi looks like she doesn't want to touch this right now, which is smart. All the Dems have to do is push the economy and not worry about this crap. Country wide, crime isn't really an issue, so it's going to be hard to convince many people that stricter gun laws are going to keep them safer, and it's going to rile up opposition for no clear reason. Funny thing is Pelosi is actually being moderate and centrist as opposed to Obama, for now at least.

How often are "assault weapons" used in the committing of a crime? Find that answer and this issue because amazingly stupid.

In my opinion the restrictions and regulations on guns espicially assault weapons are strict enough. The liberals merely use guns as a scape goat to societies problems just like how the christian right likes to use drugs. Both sides misinterpreting a symptom as a cause.

Nonetheless uncle sam not letting me buy a AK-47 is low on my priority list of activist issues compared to other rights Uncle Sam has been trampelling on.

Some redneck at my work has a bumper sticker on his old truck "Fear a Gov't that fears your guns". My gun is of no use to fend of an oppresive gov't if they are wiretapping my phone calls .

The BS of the old assault weapon band was that you could still buy a brand new AR-15, it just wouldn't have a bayonet lug or flash hider and the stock would be fixed.
