Has anyone had any experience with this? I busted my ass pretty hard on a patch of ice while snowboarding over the weekend. At first I thought I just bruised it and it'd be OK after a couple days, but the pain has gotten worse. Without ibuprofen, the pain is almost unbearable even when I'm lying on my stomach. Sitting hurts and getting up to stand hurts even more. Walking hurts too. I think I might have displaced it because there is a painful nodule that feels like the bone that is displaced laterally. I looked around on the internet and it looks like most of the time doctors just manage it with pain meds until the pain goes away which can take weeks to months. I'm probably gonna go to the doc and get it x-rayed to see how bad it is and what they can do, but thought I would see if anyone on here had any experience with this first. 2/26/2009 2:08:20 PM |

And a doctor won't help. They'll say anti-inflammatories and the but pad. I did this to myself last year while ice-skating. Someone (who shall remain unnamed) pulled me down accidentally and I went down hard.
Took me about 3 months foe the pain to go away completely.

I broke mine playing football in 11th grade
Was running back a fumble and tried to drive for the pylon but ended up getting twisted in midair and landed right on my ass and the 2 and a half
I had to lay on my stomach like Forrest Gump for like 3 days because the bone had cracked to where I couldn't stand without risking further damage
It was the second to last game of the year, so I had to miss the last game and the first few basketball practices, but I was good after about 3 weeks
Hurt like a bitch tho...its what I'd imagine getting sodomized with an 18 inch steel pipe feels like 2/26/2009 2:14:02 PM |

Oh yea it's a bitch.
Apparently the only way to reset a broken tailbone is giving birth. I reset my mom's on my way out. With no drugs, I was literally a pain in the ass from the very beginning 2/26/2009 2:15:29 PM |

not much else you can do about it, but the pain may stick around for a long time. I bruised mine bad in February of last year, and it still hurts when I sit too long or if I slouch. It took about 4-5 months before I could sit comfortably normally, and still now a year later it aches sometimes if I sit too long. 2/26/2009 2:16:01 PM |

^^^So you didn't do anything for except just pain meds?
Right now when I bend over it feels like my ass is going to fall out/something is trying to rip out of the skin

Well they said my case was kind of unique in that the end of the bone had completely snapped off
It was the part that was litterally right above my asshole
Its was like a 1/4 inch piece that was just lodged in the muscle tissue in my buttcrack
So they cut that out and showed it to me, it was pretty gross, it looked like a diseased tooth kinda
and they used some kind of cap on the exposed nerve endings on the base of what was left of the coccyx,
They used a local anthisthetic and I just remember it feeling like someone was tracing a pencil along my crack
They said it would hurt when I was standing for several months, but the pain went away almost entirely within 1 month
The only lasting effect is that I still get occasional lower back pain in that area when I run long distances, like 5 miles plus
but I only do that a few times a year, so no big deal 2/26/2009 2:25:15 PM |

I screwed mine up about 2 years ago while racing downtown on a bike. I came down hard off a curb and the seat slammed back on me. Took about 4 months to feel normal again.
Basically you just have to grin and bear it. I also learned some creative ways of sitting down on chairs to normalize the pain when I had nothing soft to sit on. 2/26/2009 5:59:29 PM |

i wiped out after riding a wheelie with a 33cc scooter and busted my ass. knocked the breath out of me and my tailbone was sore for a long time, maybe two months, but it forced me sit up straight, which was good i guess. 2/26/2009 11:40:24 PM |

I broke mine in high school. It was nearly five months before I could sit on a hard classroom chair without by donut. It's been nearly six years and it still occasionally hurts if I have to sit for a really long time. All they can do is give you meds. Oh and dont try to go horseback riding even several years later that pain was unbelievable. 2/27/2009 7:59:59 AM |

i broke mine a few years ago snowboarding. i could hardly even walk for the first week or so after it happened. it still hurts to this day. if i sit for a long time and stand up quickly its extremely painful. when i wipe out on my snowboard and hit it, im out for the rest of the day. if its really cold outside it hurts and i have a hard time sitting down/standing up. gah, it sucks.
take care of yourself. hope it gets better.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's starting to get a little better so I'm thinking I didn't injure it all too bad, which is a relief. 2/28/2009 11:12:55 AM |

My friend actually bruised hers on the Aerosmith rollercoaster at Disney. She was on anti-inflammatories, pain killers, and a butt donut for a while. 2/28/2009 6:44:04 PM |

I cracked mine in 7th or 8th grade. not a fun time. The left side of my body was basically paralyzed for about a day. I was on some high-powered pain killers for a long time, sat on pillows everywhere.
I still went to carowinds (for the middle school band competition) the day after though I couldn't pass up that trip! ahahaha. and I was trying to hook up with a hottie that would be on the trip - I figured I could get some sympathy points.
Anyways, back to the story - If I sit for long periods of time, or sit so I'm slouched in a chair, my tailbone will kill me - feels like it's breaking basically. So in my case, this is a lifetime injury, though it is very manageable.
EDIT: looks like the same story over and over again in this thread. AND DON'T GO HORSEBACK RIDING FOR A LONG TIME, as someone else said.
