Don't worry, they'll just pass the cost on to their renters.

lol that'd be a pretty sick burn

not really I guess more like a drop in the bucket to them

but it'd still be like $30,000 or something without looking up stats on the number of on-campus students

university is part of the state, and technically not even part of the city in any capacity, other than that we buy water from the city.

^Shit didnt catch that. Well all those moms and pops that own shit south of campus are gonna start selling. Anyone wanna buy a house?

it's $30 a year... I doubt anyone is going to be selling a rental property over a $30 annual fee

I'm SURE $30/unit (worst case) will stop them from making hundreds/thousands a year
this data better be public record in some easily query-able database/webservice

and..? unless they specifically exclude college dormitories as similar residential rental property registration programs in other cities have done (e.g. http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/5323), it's pretty fucking residential you cockgobbling smartass.

I wonder how this is going to affect people who rent one room out of a primary residence

750k a year in additional revenues doesn't even seem worth risking getting the hate hate hate they are sure to receive

I think its designed to strengthen the NPO.

They need the registration so that they can enforce kicking college students out of their rental when they get two NPO tickets. This way they can go straight to the rental office instead indirectly through the renters.

its kinda a shame they can do this IMO, but Raleigh hates NCSU and NCSU hates its students

so they need $30 to fill out a form?

[Edited on March 1, 2009 at 10:13 AM. Reason : i don't disagree, just saying they might wanna do that but they're not gonna pass up $$$ too]

Im guessing the fee is so that they dont have to take money from somewhere else in the budget to pay for processing the forms/records

After all, walking all over college students can get expensive!

These thoughts are just my speculation, but the connection is just obvious IMO. I wish we had someone to confront Raleigh on this, someone get Jay Dawkins on the phone.

sure, but if that was purely their reason it shouldn't cost $30

If I remember correctly, the city is planning to hire two full time employees to manage rental property issues.

I really hate the city's bias against renters. We have laws and penalties for improper activities that should be applied across the board regardless of the person's status as a homeowner or renter. The homeowner cannot legally screen tenants, yet the city has no problem taking harsh action against the homeowner for the tenant's actions. It's disgusting. Fuck you Raleigh City Council.

and personally I cant help but feel its directed toward college students, probably some of the primary renters in the city.

Horrible idea.....the fee is just going to jack up the price of rent

Another way for Raleigh to get more $ and then waste it

Did they ever lower the water rates now that we aren't in a drought? I hope they did, since they promised.

I love how they claim (claimed?) it's to protect renters and then can't explain how

Yes, you can. Just not on things like

Sometimes you can tell right away that someone is an inconsiderate douchebag. You'd just better hope they don't have a leg on which to stand in one of those classifications that someone would think you knew about ...Or that you have proof of them being a douchebag.

Like I said, you can't screen tenants. Say you just don't like someone, or you get a bad feeling about them; you might decide you'd never let this person into your own home, but the government has basically just defined a set of standards for which they can sue you for refusing to rent to them. When they fuck up the city of Raleigh will gladly hold you accountable though.
