i seriously turned the tv off after the opening monologue last night. i'm no sadist, so it was just painful to watch.

i think this guy has potential to be funny. and by potential, i mean chugging 3 beers during this commercial break.

this interview is painful to watch because you can tell they are trying way too hard to pretend to be tight. conan and tina are really close friends

What the hell is this?

Is he really relying on internet videos for humor? If I wanted to watch internet videos with lame commentary I would watch Attack of the Show.

I thought the interview was fine TBH, he's not terrible at that. I don't know how good he will be at trying to squeeze comedy out of an unfunny guest. Conan and Letterman are good at that, Leno not so much.

it was more of a, "hey, remember when we worked together on that one show?" conversation as opposed to an interview

ehh, needed some sort of filler. the guests are obv pulling the show. i'm sure in due time, there will be side shows in between the monologue and interviews. letterman's show is definitely king of that.

The chair skit was pathetic. It wasn't too bad up until they brought it back on, then it just went to hell with him talking to it and "reconciling"

The musical guest had some 80's-tastic style.

^Yeah, but he stuck with it.

People laughed for like the first few seconds of the chair clip but then it was dead silence for the rest of the clip, and he still went out there and talked to the chair and completed the bit. I was impressed.

But it might have been better if he'd not stuck with it and just laughed about how stupid it was.

Tonight was better than last night. Hopefully, that trend will continue.

For the record I don't really think Conan is funny either. Almost never.

Leno is rarely funny.
And Letterman occasionally manages to get a laugh.

^^I'm not acting like Conan didn't do that.

When you're making a nightly show like this, stuff is bound to fail pretty hard. How you handle those missteps is what makes the show watchable, and oftentimes, it's the funniest stuff.

I almost made this thread last night.

Then decided that his unfunniness didn't warrant it.

And he recycled at least 2 jokes from his weekend update.

Yea Conan had laughless skits and he knew how to deal with them to get at least a little laugh out of them. I did not see Fallon so I don't know how he dealt.

He will not succeed on late night for the same reason that Jon Stewart did not succeed at the Oscars.

HOLY SHIT PEOPLE... it's his first week. did you expect caviar and new cars? every show needs a bit of time to find a groove and an audience. how about giving it a bit of time before deciding you don't like it. it prolly won't even be the same in 6 months time.

I agree that he's going to be nervous in this new arena for him.. hell, look at Conan's first few years. But, I fear for that show b/c guests like Tina Fey (who he's known more than most people that'll be on the show) should be in his wheelhouse. However, SHE was carrying the interview and he was just repeating names she said to somehow stay involved in HIS show.

Also, Conan's shaky start can be chalked up to him having essentially zero on-camera experience, whereas Fallon has had years of screwing up sketches b/c he can't keep a straight face or remember what he's supposed to do.

Fallon just seems incredibly desperate and lucky to be there. But he doesn't just need to get confidence...he needs to alter his speech. Modulate it. Become more dynamic. It's grating to listen to the monotone.
