Well, my girlfriend and I planned a short little trip to Savannah, GA for spring break. It's only a 5 hr drive and seemed like a good idea to get away from the snow. We drive down monday night and get to our hotel. Well that night we go out and the car is acting kinda weird but we didn't think much of it. Tuesday we get up and go out and the car will crank but then starts vibrating really bad and turns off. I have no knowledge of cars/engines whatever so I get a guy at the hotel to help me look at it and he has no clue either.

So we decide to just call a tow truck to have it taken to the Honda dealership/shop down the street. I drive a 2004 Honda Accord btw. We get the car to the dealership late Tuesday and have to wait till Wednesday for a diagnostics test or whatever. Turns out that somewhere on the way down we got what the guy called "bad gas" that had a lot of water in it. I'm sure some of you know what this means, but apparently it can fuck up things pretty bad. They had to drain the gas tank, take out and drain all of the fuel lines, take out the fuel injection and clean it, and some other random related shit.

Also turned out I need new rear brake pads so we went ahead and got those done too. Tow, diagnostics, labor, and everything came out to just under $1,600, plus we had to book an extra night at the hotel(where we spent 90% of the trip due to no ride). Luckily today the dealership lent us a rental car so we could actually see Savannah.

What a fucking ordeal

I prob. did get ripped but there was no other option really when you're far off with no one to help you. I guess I could have had it towed to another garage for another opinion but that sounded pretty idiotic. I know it could have been condensation but I rarely let it sit on E, but whatever.

that sucks man. know where you got this bag gas?

there's a station down the street from me that always has hella cheap gas....but it burns through your car in about 2 days of normal driving. It's no secret that some stations are shady like this. Is there any way to report them? as I'm sure there are regulations...

Don't let these folks bring you down ... I think you did the best you could under the circumstances. I don't know what their hourly rate is, but with very few parts replaced, that is a lot of hours.

I have a funny story about dealerships. One day during work I decided to go home for lunch. I got there, ate, and tried to start my car. At first it wouldn't come on at all. Then it came on and died after a few seconds. I got it started again and it worked for a little bit so I tried to drive it, it made it about 500 ft before it died, I lost power steering so I had to coast carefully to a driveway.

I called in the crew of men I know, asking what it could have been. Battery or alternator. Everyone said it was the alternator because it wouldnt start most of the time. I was like "Fuck yeah, it's under warranty and I get a free tow to the dealership too, call them bitches up"

So we called and spoke to the dealership, they were like "Yeah most likely the alternator". They towed it and the bf called and goes "It's your battery." We wanted to put the battery in before they did anything because that was under warranty. They wouldn't let us touch it on the lot, so we asked them to tow it off, they said no. We asked to push the fucking thing of their lot to check the battery, not after a $36 charge for checking the vehicle.

It was such bullshit, fucking dealerships

1600 dollars to drain the tank and some brakes? I would've driven down myself to do that.

seems like they did more work then they needed to do, and a pair of break pads shouldn't cost more than like 120 to replace with labor. oh well, shit like this happens all the time.

intellectual curiosity about how things work is a trait common among engineers, and usually ensures that you don't get taken for a ride in situations like this.

Did you buy only one tank of gas on the way up there, and buy it w/ a credit card? Maybe you could find the specific gas station where it happened, and get some sort of compensation, or, if you wanted, consider/threaten legal action. It'd be a pain in the ass to make it happen, but it could be worth it.

it's unlikely that it's all from one single fill-up. it usually accumulates in the tank over time. just happened to finally fill the fuel filter on this trip.

last yr when we were in myrtle beach my parent's AC broke down (middle of july)

they told my dad that it would be able $980 to fix the compressor, including parts & labor.

I told him he better ride hot on the way home and get it fixed here.

Turned out it was a $40 switch that failed instead.

In these destination type places, they will def. take your ass for a ride if you arent careful

Meh, just draining the gas and changing the filter would have been plenty. $20 parts and a few hours in the parking lot.

^^ maybe everywhere

but in a lot of smaller cities, i would always look for a mom & pop place that specializes in imports or whatever the case may be

its much harder to find these places when you are on vacation, spring break, out of town on business, etc

no way in hell a fuel filter is complete trash after 5 years. I bet they took him for a ride and it was just something like a cam angle sensor.

if his regular gas station back home has water issues, then yes, 5 years could fill it up
