The impact scared me, it was very loud from the couple feet I was away from it. It sounded like a racquetball had been slammed against it. That aside, I managed to break my blinds soon after I ripped the light fixture out of the ceiling that I was presently working on. When I saw the impact, I realized that it was a bird hit because of the feathers, but didn't realize until I went outside that it was bird shit on the window. The robin had its beak open and was panting while sitting much like a hen would on her eggs. I noticed that it was blinking from time to time and wasn't paralyzed, but had suffered a severe trauma from impact and likely had no chance of survival. I went in for a plastic bag assuming the end was near, when I came back out, the robin had flipped over and wasn't breathing. Aside from a few twitches in its legs and tail, it was gone, it's beak was now closed. I could see clearly that the bird had shit itself on a tail-end impact (white feathers in impact poop, white feathers under the chest). I only regret that I didn't have a good way to euthanize it, but it didn't live more than 10 minutes after impact and I quickly wrapped it up in the plastic bag and put it with the other dozen dead birds that had accumulated from the E.S. King Village bus stop on Jackson St. There's a lady at the apt. complex here that takes the dead birds and buries them in the wood line. If there's anyone that desires to dissect an animal, this is a good specimen, rigor mortis should just be setting in as it was still warm when I placed it in the bucket about 30 minutes ago. Birds in general tend do have problems with panes of glass, although my window was closed, is surrounded with brick, and the blinds were shut. I'm going to repair my blinds now and rehang my lighting fixture. For those concerned, see below:

thread delivered.

I made this same thread...ohhh...4 years ago

I'd go so far as to say my dead bird was prettier
3/7/2009 7:13:34 PM
3/7/2009 7:15:01 PM
but did he have a little gun and a suicide note??
3/7/2009 7:15:12 PM
^^Shouldn't life embrace death in the form of science?^No, this was more of a kamikaze It was also an ass-first mortal wounding... so there wasn't any blood... just shit]
3/7/2009 7:16:00 PM
i also had a dead bird thread where a crow had gotten caught on a string, and somehow tied himself to a branch of a tree by my house. he was dead from starvation, and was hanging 30 or so feet above my back deck for 3 months before decomposition finally had progressed enough that he fell onto my deck.it was gross to say the very least
3/7/2009 7:19:40 PM
That's exactly why I only waited long enough for the bird to stop moving before I removed it from directly under my window. I really don't like rotten carcasses, they're... rotten

This reminds me of when I used to stuff specimen birds for the science dept. of WFU. -alot of them where window hits. And elkaybie has the better bird b/c it has a note. I mean since he could write, clearly he was the smarter bird of the two.

the bird must have been drunk from the fermented berries

I now wonder... if this lady buries 2 dozen birds a week, how long will it take before I have an Animal Cemetery problem on my hands? I might need my shotgun.
3/8/2009 12:31:11 AM
bird shot, lulz
3/8/2009 12:31:50 AM
Jackson Street bus stop claims another victim. My quick glance through Peterson's guide seems to make me think it was a Cedar Waxwing. Another one for the great aviary in the sky.]
3/9/2009 3:19:07 PM
if it keeps happening and i know its crappy but you can always get something to put in your window such as a silhouette. and if you ever happen upon a bird you think may make it your best bet is to contact someone like piedmont wildlife.
3/9/2009 3:29:27 PM
That's random as hell.....I had found an identical looking bird on my back porch two days ago I can only assume the same cause of death
3/9/2009 3:32:28 PM
A good way to euthanize a robin? He weighs like five ounces. You're a full grown human. On a less related note, last week when I was walking my dogs in the AM before work one day, a neighbor had like 100 robins hanging out in his yard. It was a bit weird.
3/9/2009 4:36:05 PM
yeah, a shovel is a good way to finish it off
3/9/2009 5:12:01 PM
nice waxwing.damn, are you like the death of birds or something? what is it with you and dead birds everywhere?
3/9/2009 5:15:14 PM
Or you could just step on it. Or pick it up and break it's neck.
3/9/2009 5:16:37 PM
poor lil feller, just couldnt take it no more......he 68ed
3/9/2009 5:17:33 PM
3/9/2009 5:21:56 PM
whenever we had a mortally wounded bird at work, we would just break its neck. its quick and humane. i know this doesn't sound too appealing, but you should freeze those birds if they don't have any visible wounds. museums and colleges love adding to their skins collections. they probably wouldn't want a robin, but that cedar waxwing is nice.
3/9/2009 5:38:46 PM
there's shit tons of them around
3/9/2009 5:43:33 PM
I never see dead birds. maybee cause I don't bother cleaning my windows or my parrots scare them away
3/9/2009 5:45:32 PM
I've had quite a few collisions around the house when the birds were learning how to fly unclipped.http://www.sialis.org/hospdispatch.htmThere is a pretty good section on how to legally and humanely euthanize birds.
3/9/2009 6:54:03 PM
i'm pretty sure this is not considered "suicided".
3/9/2009 6:57:44 PM
none involving euthanasia i hope...
3/9/2009 6:58:10 PM
I have only had one flock member kick the bucket, but he had an unfortunate encounter with a cat.
3/9/2009 7:01:47 PM
Did it have Lyme disease?
