uhhh...no blogging here. I've come to the conclusion that the world doesn't want to hear me whine about my fucked up life, being that everybody's got problems of their own, to which mine pale in comparison.

I don't blog, but I run http://www.darktronica.com and occasionally write album reviews and other such opinion-y bits. Aside from all of the band profiles being opinion-y bits, of course.

David you need to bring the browse/search aspect of that site into the 21st century holmes. you should at least have a search box (preferable with ajaxy incremental search). and the browse by first letter scheme is dated too. you could do a coverflow effect or something

[Edited on March 9, 2009 at 11:48 AM. Reason : what kind of traffic do you get on there? i thought it was more community driven now]

Yeah, I know I do. I just haven't had time to do any design changes in so long. I hardly even have time to keep the content updated--I'm sitting on a spreadsheet of about 150 more bands I want to add.

I don't want to do a coverflow effect that screams, "Hey, I'm trying to copy iTunes!" I do want to improve the navigation, but purely to make it more functional, not to be flashy. The alphabetical index is straightforward and easy for browsing, but yeah, it's a bit dated. But on a site that's designed to be encyclopedic and inviting for people to just browse through and find new bands that sound interesting, I'm not sure a coverflow would be helpful. A random cover might catch someone's eye, but that's balanced against the fact that people wouldn't recognize 90% of the albums since it's not their own collection they're browsing.

What do you think?

Having search has been the biggest thing on my list for ages, but I just haven't taken the time to do it.

yeah coverflow itself would be pretty lame, just a suggestion to illustrate the benefits of visually browsing. even something like http://i43.tinypic.com/29glv94.png would be useful without looking too much like copying itunes. i'm sure there's other ways that make sense too. i agree since it's an encyclopedia, there's potential for it to be to much to display the entire catalog in this way, but even my crappy itunes library with 700 artists, browsing by artist isn't overwhelming at all

I've got something like that for each letter when you first click in to a letter, with a bit more info on each band. What would make more sense from your perspective to make it more appealing or modern? I'm pretty minimalist from a design standpoint and like to keep things simple aesthetically, but I suppose 15 minutes on MySpace is enough to prove that I'm in a minority in that regard.

I want to do a complete overhaul of the site's front end, but it probably won't be until at least July when I can make that happen. But I'd like to try and get some search and a simple About Me page with contact info before then; I've gotten a few demos and promo albums sent my way already, but I want to make it look more professional so I can hit up some labels for media service instead of the occasional band contacting me through the darktronica MySpace profile for a shipping address.

It sounds like not only are your tastes stuck in 2002, you may have fallen off the goth train completely. (It seems fitting that "Train" by Goldfrapp came out in 2003?)

David can probably better answer the question, but it just describes a music genre. The name of the record label.

My description of industrial music is at http://www.darktronica.com/genres.php?genre=6. That description is more about old-school industrial music though, which has been evolving ever since the early 1980's. Not many people are that into it anymore, and the traditional sound has been slowly dying for the last 15 years or so as folks have moved on to other genres.

"Lots of equipment moving in harmony" isn't that bad a description actually, although early artists didn't care too much about the harmony part.
