So one of my tires slowly gets flatter, but since it's over the course of a few days that I even notice it, when I went to put air in it, I noticed the cap on that tire had broken off. So my thinking is that slowly, the pressure leaks out (especially when driven) and thus, I need a new cap. So last night I was at the gas station and the dude told me that there is absolutely no purpose for that cap and that it has nothing to do with the air. Now even though I don't see one, it's very possible that I have a nail in it or something, but do the caps really have no purpose?

All the caps do is protect the valves and keep dirt and crap out of there. A missing cap is not the problem.

if you think about it, the caps aren't air tight, so they don't have anything to do with keeping the tire inflated. it more for protecting the valve and peace of mind.

trick for someone... take the valve stem core out, put the cap back on. The air will slowly leak out...

Don't you want to try to get it plugged? That's like $10.

^^^?

I can't remember exactly how much the tire was but I remember it being really fucking expensive and yeah, it was in the $200 range easily.

^well yeah, but with my luck with tires I need a new one. But I certainly hope so I can get it patched....

HEY, twocents.

if you want to see if your valvestems are leaking... spit on your finger and cover the opening to the valve with a bubble of spit. you'll see real quick if air is leaking out of the valvestem. probably not, it's far more likely you've got a nail or something in the tread.

so, definitely get a $10 plug ASAP. do not drive around on under-inflated tires. if you do, you will wind up scrubbing material off of the inside of the sidewalls.

at which point the service station will see the fluff in the tire when they dismount it, and will refuse to plug the tire due to liability. then you'll be on the hook for at least 2 new tires, in the range of $100

so, point is, go get this tire plugged now, or ASAP. and keep the pressure up until you do.

uh . . . if you take the core out, it ain't gonna slowly leak out. That shit will be flat quite fast. If you want it slow, you need to just loosen the core.

ADD:
m2c, where do you get your tires? i'm sure you can find one for cheaper than that. unless you need some high performance stuff.
