requirements?

I walked out of petsmart today and one of the employees mentioned taking a 35 page personality assessment. All this for a $7.50/hour job.

Damn yo. That blows.

To apply for Best Buy, you go on line and take a similarly long test. You have to get past that first online test to be considered for hiring.

According to the internet it's a retarded version of the Myers-Briggs. I'm glad I have never had to endure something that stupid. I guess it might weed out the crazies, but I doubt it really works.

The manager at Sears told my brother (a NCSU student at the time) that he had the worst test scores he had ever seen. Some questions aren't meant to be answered literally. Questions like:
"Everybody steals at some point" - Do not answer "Yes" to this question despite the fact that it's true.
"How many criminals do you know" - We all know that everyone who has ever driven a car has broken a law; apparently that's not what they mean.
"How many days of school did you miss in high school?" - Just because you were in the top 90 some percent of your class does not mean that it's ok that you skipped 19 days of school. Never mind that they'll hire high school dropouts. They won't hire you if you skipped too many days.

We found this to be pretty funny and still laugh about it from time to time.

All those tests really do is test your ability to see what answer they want you to choose.

I had to take one of these for a pet sales job. Filled out the test in the way that seemed most likely to get me the position, and it worked. I'm a god-awful salesperson. Boss changed some of the questions after that.

this was my interview for my first job at winn-dixie:

"why do you want a job?"
"to make some money"
"you have transportation?"
"yes, i just got my license. that's why i need some money."
"what size shirt do you wear?"
"extra large"
"see you monday"
"thanks"

i made $5.25 /hr

The reason for these tests is b/c the managers can't weed out people themselves, and they need a little help from corporate.

Yup.

"Everybody steals at some point" = "Are you going to steal from us?"
"How many criminals do you know" = "Are you a criminal?"
"How many days of school did you miss in high school?" = "Can we count on you to show up?"

If you don't answer those questions False, 0, and 0 then you probably are too dumb to command that $7.50/hour.

And to answer the initial question... because the lowest paying jobs get a higher percentage of applications from people that don't meet some of the dumbest requirements.

I'll agree. In my experience, the more trivial the job, the more bullshit I had to deal with to get the job. My first full time job out of college required an interview and a discussion about Georgia football. Working at Circuit City was a different story.

i had to take a 200 question test that i failed because i answered it honestly for applebees, the manager still hired me though because she thought after interviewing me that i would be a good server

i agree with the bs on more trivial jobs, right now i make 2.13 plus tips and i have to do so much shit its not even close to funny, and now corporate is mandating how to run the store and now none of us really make any money, 7 people on on a friday night is retarded when 4-5 have handled it just as fine in the past

there are all kinds of ethics tests, personality tests and things of the like (about 2/3 hours worth) for getting a job at harris teeter. but at least they pay more than $7.50. it's still ridiculous.

Since pretty much anyone is qualified to work the lowest paid jobs (English speaker, Driver's License), they have higher standards for applicants because they don't require a college degree, any real experience, or serious backgrounds checks that go along with a resume.

SO basically if you fail the test at BestBuy there is no point in ever applying again? Or do they delete the records after a certain period of time?

you have to pass the test so that they know you're not gonna snap on the dumb people that try to harass you when you're working there.

When I interviewed for my current job after graduating, I met a guy at Sammy's. We had a burger and just chit chatted about past experiences and some stuff from school. I was hired the following week.

1st and hopefully last time ever going to Sammy's.

It does make sense now, you can't have really dumbasses or potential snappers working with the public that you expect to spend money with you, or could go elsewhere. Also, they want to know you'll lie a little bit for a 'good cause', so you will lie a little to customers to make a sale.

lol

^ If the product they're selling is so shitty that you have to lie to the customers to sell it, I wouldn't want to be working there to begin with.

i hate these tests

i got through 3 rounds of interviews at this one job, including passing a skills test to only be told that i didnt score high enough on the personality test to warrant an offer

if you're not able to figure out you should lie about these questions, how are you going to lie to a customer when they ask if the $89.99 extended warranty is worth it?

you would think answering True would be better since it means your are suspicious of customers and are not to
naive to think that scary looking gangsta in the CD aisle is pocketing merchandise...
