Is this the new fad or something? We all know these bands that play in NC bars suck ass. They are horrible but for some reason it is "cool" to like these bands. There are enough good recent bands and old bands to listen to. You are not cool, you are a fucking poser, the only reason you like these bands is because you're a fucking alcoholic and a chipmunk queefing sounds like an orchestra with the aid of alcohol.

are you saying that someone can't be the judge of music on their own but must wait until a band "makes it" so someone else can tell us they are worth listening to?

anywho, back to topic

i'd rather go to a bar to drink, and i'd usually rather have a shittly band playing in the background than shitty cock rock that i've heard a million times before

1. it's the brewery that sucks.

2. there are LOTS of great bands in the triangle.

3. there are only a few bars that have GOOD bands come. slim's occasionally is one of them. pinhook in durham has good bands occasionally.

4. most of the other good local shows are at clubs that are more show oriented.

5. congratulations on making a thread after a shitty band played at the shitty bar you frequent.

6. live music is not a fad. it is one of the most constant traditions in humanity.

Name a band that plays in a bar around here that has sold 100,000 cds, not a million, just a tenth of what a bunch of other bands sell who are rarely good either. So if a band selling a million cds is rarely good what about one that can't even sell a tenth of that.

Is this seriously how you judge a band?

^to be fair I don't know any, but I don't keep up with that stuff. If it sounds good, that's all that matters...who cares if they a big name.

thats what I was trying to figure out originally..what he is considering a "bar" because some people call any small music venue a "bar" ie I know plenty of people who consider Cats Cradle a bar..but to me there is a difference /shrug

Its how the world judges a band. If they like them they buy their cd.

I don't like nickelback but not because other people don't like nickelback. I don't like nickelback because I've heard them on the radio and did not like them.

I like Audioslave though, seems like they are good trollbait.....and go

in college, its cool if you dig obscure music almost no one else likes, while bashing the music most people do like

i can name a few bands that started playing small clubs in NC that have sold more than 100,000 CDs but I dont use albums sold to tell me whether a band is good or not.

If you want to sell the most records, you fit your music into a few well chosen, neatly packaged formulas and have a bit of luck, hard work, and contacts along the way. notice quality isnt necessarily a prerequisite.

Wanting to write challenging or unique music is a different story. most important to note is that it means there is a good chance your style isnt going to be as accessible to the general public that simply wants something to sing along to or keep them occupied on their way to work. And theres nothing wrong with that, not everyone is into music as much as the next person is.

and i saw that coming, and that card has been pulled 10000000 times on TWW. it has nothing to do with the number of people that like the band, and 99% of people that listen to music you consider "obscure" will tell you that and be telling the truth. i can name plenty of bands that have been on the radio at some point in their career that I really enjoy, but in my overall collection of music, they probably make up like 5%. but, the point is that good music is good music. whether the band is playing in your backyard or selling 5bajillion copies and all over music and tv, I couldn't care less as long as its quality.

a lot of people are passive about music and wait for it to come to them so they can play it in the background while they drive to the office. others of us are actively seeking new and interesting music because we like to identify with it a little more. thats fine dawg.

Is Drifting Through still around? I remember seeing them play in a parking lot and thinking they were pretty good.

haha so true. One of my friends, her brother is always forming a band. He's actually really good but a complete slacker. They never make it beyond playing in crappy clubs around the Triangle before they start hating each other and break up.

i like slim's, i just feel like i stick out like a sore thumb when i go there. all so hipster in there. i have good friend that is really into obscure music and she totally fits in. but me, not so much. i swear last time i was there this dude was wearing a fake mustache. I was going to take a picture of him just b/c it looked so ridiculous, then i chickened out.
