Can anybody suggest a good place for servicing my engine without getting ripped off! There is a 'Service Engine Soon' warning on the dashboard! It is a old car and I dont want to spend a lot on it at this point!
Thanks! 3/13/2009 2:00:51 PM |

take it to a parts store (advance auto, auto zone) and have them check the codes (this is $free). report back and tell us what it is.

^Like BBR said...get a parts store to scan the codes for free. And then ask us what to do.
And then, just to be throwing it out there...I'm a very reasonable mechanic. 3/13/2009 2:51:12 PM |

ask him to write down the actual code. it should start with a P and be a couple numbers after that. 3/13/2009 10:23:15 PM |

OK... I can really use some help here...Yesterday my engine stopped and flashed service engine soon. I had that flashing sign until this morning but now it is gone..
I did go to the auto parts store and found one error code
P0340 - Cam Shaft sensor malfunction
Probable cause: BB1.- Cam sensor defective BB2.- Check connector and wiring to sensor BB3.- Engine mechanical condition - timing belt/chain BBout of time
The guy at the autoparts store suggested me to buy these:
1. Cam sensor - 28.99$ 2. Timing Belt - 21.99$ 3. Timing Belt component kit - 34.99$ 4. Waterpump - 36.99$
Firestone is charging me 130 dollars for buying and replacing Cam sensor alone!! Other mechanics are charging around 35 to 40 dollars for labor. I am not sure if it is just the cam sensor or something else that is causing the problem (may be wiring ??).. Please give your two cents.. Could anyone check and fix this??
Thanks in advance! 4/26/2009 11:48:16 AM |

right now, does the car run at all? What exactly happened--it just stalled one time and then you just cranked it back up and it still ran? 4/26/2009 3:08:38 PM |

an 0340 on that car means you have no cmp signal at the pcm, theres a 1% chance you have no reference voltage going to the sensor, and a 99% chance that the sensor is bad
its not a hard job at all, there are four bolts that hold the sensor in the back of the head, just make sure the target magnet is aligned on the dowel pin right when you put it back together, it takes 15 minutes tops to change out 4/26/2009 3:30:32 PM |

^^ Yes. The same thing happened a couple of months ago. The car suddenly stopped while flashing the 'no oil' signal. I let it rest for a couple of mins and it ran again.. yesterday the same thing happened. I restarted after a couple of mins and it rang again but this time, the 'service engine soon' signal stayed on for a few hours and now it suddenly disappeared. The car runs fine now but I am sure it will get bad again.
The firestone guy says it may not be just the circuit. The error codes cannot detect the complete issue. A "Diagnostic Test" need to be run which would cost me 100+ dollars 4/26/2009 5:26:45 PM |

cam sensor is a VERY common failure on those cars. heat will cause intermittent operation, hence why it starts back up after you let it sit for a while. 4/26/2009 5:38:23 PM |

As of late, I'm going through one of my mentally fucked in the goddamn head stages, which will eventually go the fuck away, and I'll return to the normal attention whore that I am and be back to working on fucking shit again. I hope soon. I'm tired of feeling tired and just goddamn depressed, and could seriously use a good fucking dose of my old energy. Shit will happen eventually. Hope soon, dammit.4/28/2009 3:11:02 PM |
