First off, the are usually a lot cheaper than new ones. Second, most all of the appliances will fail at some time, minor inconvenience for a small amount of time, but then BAM, new appliances. So far we have had a new dishwasher, washing machine, and completely new air conditioning and heating system. Now all my roommate and I have to break is the stove and dryer and we are set. One can see the differences in energy costs and the relationship with the amount of appliances we have broken. Finally we have an actual wood burning fire place in a second story apartment. I don’t believe many newer apartments have wood burning fire places. Now TWW, what are your thoughts on old apartments vs. new apartments.

i don't like wood paneling
3/13/2009 3:27:37 PM
I have wood paneling in my bedroom and it sucks really bad.
3/13/2009 3:28:15 PM
what does it matter? i don't give a fuck what the walls are like as long as they aren't covered in feces or gay porn unless i'm owning it.
3/13/2009 3:30:06 PM
you can get some really good location for cheaper with older apts. most have really nice hardwood floors etc.

my house is on the national historic registry.ballin'
3/13/2009 3:46:12 PM
Sometimes when I see really old houses I wonder if they put a dead cat in the foundation.
3/13/2009 4:36:03 PM
the only reason i like older places is character. they all seem pretty energy inefficient to me. the place i live in now has single pane windows. blah. but it has been all redone, so besides, that it is awesome and still has a lot of character. and i can't change the windows, so something i have to live with.
3/13/2009 4:39:59 PM
wtf is character, really, b/c it seems like it's just shit that's old and half worn out
3/13/2009 4:48:04 PM
uh no. especially not when i say it is all redone. the building, the courtyard, it is a historic place, still has original hardwood floors, but new appliances, new paint, new countertops, cabinets, tile, original tile in the bathroom.it isn't a cookie cutter cheapy mass produced apartment, i guess is what i mean.
3/13/2009 4:49:57 PM
oh, ok
3/13/2009 4:53:18 PM
character = not cookie cutter or hamster housing
3/13/2009 5:08:26 PM
and it is FUN to fix things!!! even if it IS run down you can make it nice (if you buy a place with "character")or i think it is fun, to have little projects.
3/13/2009 5:09:09 PM
but i like cookies
3/13/2009 5:15:01 PM
me too. but the homemade made from scratch kind. not the kind that you buy at the store in little clumps and then put in the oven.
3/13/2009 5:16:12 PM
perhaps you haven't tried the nestle white chocolate and macadamia ones
3/13/2009 5:21:16 PM
why would there be dead cats in the foundation?
3/13/2009 5:41:18 PM
It used to be done for luck centuries ago.
3/13/2009 5:46:49 PM
I found a dead cat on the side of the road so I took it home, cooked it n put some honey on it and the I ate it...is that bad?
3/13/2009 5:57:22 PM
i was on board until the honey
