First off, the are usually a lot cheaper than new ones. Second, most all of the appliances will fail at some time, minor inconvenience for a small amount of time, but then BAM, new appliances. So far we have had a new dishwasher, washing machine, and completely new air conditioning and heating system. Now all my roommate and I have to break is the stove and dryer and we are set. One can see the differences in energy costs and the relationship with the amount of appliances we have broken. Finally we have an actual wood burning fire place in a second story apartment. I don’t believe many newer apartments have wood burning fire places. Now TWW, what are your thoughts on old apartments vs. new apartments.

Sometimes when I see really old houses I wonder if they put a dead cat in the foundation.

the only reason i like older places is character. they all seem pretty energy inefficient to me. the place i live in now has single pane windows. blah. but it has been all redone, so besides, that it is awesome and still has a lot of character. and i can't change the windows, so something i have to live with.

uh no. especially not when i say it is all redone. the building, the courtyard, it is a historic place, still has original hardwood floors, but new appliances, new paint, new countertops, cabinets, tile, original tile in the bathroom.

it isn't a cookie cutter cheapy mass produced apartment, i guess is what i mean.

and it is FUN to fix things!!! even if it IS run down you can make it nice (if you buy a place with "character")

or i think it is fun, to have little projects.

me too. but the homemade made from scratch kind. not the kind that you buy at the store in little clumps and then put in the oven.
