So, TWW, I need your advice. This is my first year at a new graduate school, and I am throwing my first party. I know a lot of people, but I don't know anyone all that well, which is one reason why I am throwing the party. We are all mathematics students, and the occasion of the party is 3-14, which to a math student is Pi Day. I just had the idea for the party today, and sent out an e-mail a few hours ago, inviting everyone. Here is the e-mail I sent:

In honor of that King who lords over the vast and uncountable dominion of irrational numbers, and who is inextricably and gloriously woven through the entire tapestry of mathematics, and indeed the fabric of our physical universe, you are cordially invited to attend a PI PARTY. This Pi Party will of course take place on 3/14 (Saturday, tomorrow or today) at my apartment. Partygoers are encouraged (if they wish) to bring a pie, be it a pizza pie or a pie of the more conventional variety, for the enjoyment of all. A keg of beer pie will be provided.

The party will begin around 9:00 P.M. My apartment is at ******* about a half-mile past Wal-Mart. The address and directions follow the body of this e-mail.

Activities will include the watching of the Big East Tournament Final, which begins at 9:00.

Feel free to bring your significant others or any other persons whom I might have forgotten among the addressees of this e-mail. RSVPs would be helpful, but are not necessary.

Hope to see you there!

Address: (directions, etc.)

Looking back, this strikes me as a really terrible, stupid, crazy, creepy sort of invitation. I don't know what in the hell possessed me to write it like this. So I have two questions:
1. Does it strike YOU as terrible, stupid, crazy and creepy?
2. If so, what should I do (if anything can be done) to rectify this situation? I do not want to make the problem any worse than it is.

Please be courteous if at all possible, as I think I have just done something really stupid and therefore am not feeling very good so please don't make it worse. Thx

omg, what a massive relief...I was this close to sending out an e-mail saying "Wow, looking back, that was the worst invitation I have ever read. However..." which really would have been creepy. Thanks a million, guys, for real.

Sounds nerdy to me, the idea of free pizza and keg beer will probably help your turnout.

You, and them, are there to get trashed and get to know each other. It's not uncommon around here for grad student parties to be divided into department- I find the math, lit and environment school students to be the most entertaining for parties .

Last math grad student party I was at, a bike got stuffed into the bathtub, someone's gf was advertising herself for sex, and someone was doing kegstands.

nerdy as hell, but legit and not creepy in the least. if i were a grad student in maths, i'd totally go.

a keg of beer, can't go wrong. im sure your party is going along just fine.

report back tomorrow on how full your keg still is

I think I'd rather go to a coke * strippers * wife-swapping party.

party received a C minus....five people came, and they were people I knew reasonably well anyway. Nobody got shit-faced, nobody brought a pie, we just chilled for 2 hours and then everyone left. It was fun, but not the success I was hoping it would be. However, it was encouraging that some people came, and we had a good time, at least. And it was the first day of Spring Break, so probably some of the people I invited had already left town. So, my party passed...but barely. On the plus side, I am not hung over right now.
