I'm moving this Fall and want to bring an animal with me that I can train now.

Is it easier to potty train a cat or a small dog (using a litter box).

Also which is easier to take care of and will do less damage if I leave them alone in the apartment all day or is this even reasonable?

I know it sounds like I should probably get a cat but was wondering if anyone had any advice or training techniques (potty, and not messing stuff up when gone).

If you're going to be leaving more than 8-10 hours you should consider a fish or something. Dogs want to be walked and played with, cats need time to roam outside. However for long days I would say cat, but for enjoyment DEFINITELY dog

Cat is easiest to litter train, it is instinct for them to dig and cover.

As far as destroying stuff when you are gone, for a dog, use a crate! They stay safe and you keep your wires unchewed.

how hard is it to train a small dog to use a litter box, or is it useless if they don't cover their crap up?

I guess I could always cover it up for them and walk them at my leisure instead of being forced to walk it for the bathroom.

it isnt "hard" to train a small dog to use the litterbox, but you will need to scoop immediately to keep your apt from smelling...

you might as well get newspaper and leave it by the front door for eternity imo, as it is just as easy to clean and isn't as expensive as a box, litter, and scoops...that is if you don't want to walk the pup twice a day

How can you keep cats and dogs from chewing stuff up while gone or is a crate absolutely necessary?

I see, that in unfortunately b/c I'd rather have a dog...couldn't I just cover it up for them and scoop later or are there turds that much bigger than cats?

I'd probably get a small yorkshire terrier or as small a dog as possible.

I read you can buy some plastic covers for wires that keeps cats away, not sure about dogs but i'll look into it.
So any opinions on very small dogs and litter boxes? Does their crap smell that much worse or is it b/c of the fact that they don't cover it?

As far as poop size, yorkie or chihuahua wont be much different than a cat.

You COULD cover it I suppose.

I'm a fan of the crate, so obviously I'm biased. As an owner of several pups, it is the best way to train imo. It keeps the pup safe. Some people use a baby-gate to corner pup into the corner, but this results in cabinets being chewed.

I believe cat poop smells worse than dog poop.

The problem with the box is dogs won't cover it.

Well I wouldn't mind covering it up for them as long as I don't have to take it out every time they go.
Would I need a larger litterbox for a yorkshire terrier?
If I trained it to only chew on chewtoys do you think I'd still have to put in in a crate while I'm gone?

With the type of questions you are asking I don't think you should have anything other than a goldfish dude
Maybe a hamster.
Or a rock.

yes, even with chewtoys, the house will be chewed

Not worth the little bugger getting a string up out of the carpet and eating it. Or finding a nice shoe lace. Or magazine.

Better safe than sorry!

get a cat from the pound that already knows how to crap in a box. Problem solved you can leave for days and just leave food down. Do not get a puppy unless you want to spend lots of time with it.

So what you're saying is dogs should be kept in crates while gone and cats shouldn't, or should they be kept in crates while gone too?

I like yorkshire terriers and I feel like cats are so fragile that if I try to play around with them too much they may get hurt or scratch me. Also seems likes dogs will sit next to you on the couch and watch TV while a cat will just walk around and rub against your legs.

I already have a hamster which is harder to take care of than a goldfish. When I do get a cat or dog I'm going to let them eat it or I'll just throw it in the woods, if I'm feeling nice I might bring it back to the store.

At least I'm not married and forced to fap everynight loser.

cats are pretty much failproof if you get them declawed. All you have to do is feed them, clean their litter box, and teach them not to jump on the kitchen counters (by spraying them w/ water). If you feed them, and allow them to sleep beside you, they automatically love you.

If you are getting a dog, make sure you have the time to commit to them.

naw B I cremated her myself after I killed her.

Sounds like a cat is the perfect fit for me.
I just don't see why I couldn't keep a yorkie from the replies in here. I could cover its feces with litter myself and keep it in a crate during the day and walk it every other day at my leisure.

or

Because neither a cat or a dog would be good in your home.

Walk the dog at your leisure? No no no. They need to be walked a few times a day at least. Exercise is important and your house is really going to smell like shit if you carry out this plan.

Word well if I leave a cat in the house alone all day what should I worry about. I usually keep my stuff organized and keep clothes and shoes in the closet. I can also cover wires with plastic coverings they sell and don't care about my furniture. Is there anything else I should be worried about? Its not going to scratch up my monitor and tv is it

a wise man once told me the difference between cats and dogs. he said, "when you run over someone's cat in the road, you just keep on going. when you hit a dog you stop and see if you can get a hold of the owner."
so true

Puppies are a pain in the ass. They dont know how to signal and just shit pee anywhere.

With a cat you dont have to worry about when or how it goes. All you gotta do is scoop whenever.

I have two cats and a dog.

The cats are only 10% (if that) of the work that the dog takes.

I haven't had to do any work to teach my cats a damned thing. I showed them the litter box, gave them some toys, showed them where it was ok to scratch -- that's was it. No effort. Now, I feed them, water them, change their litter box, and everything else is gravy.

The dog...let's just say that I am taking my puppy to class once a week and making sure that she "does her homework."
