a few hours

carolina clash tomorrow!!! I love the charlotte courses. They let you air it out every so often.

Anyone else playing???

Related to other thread, I've aced hole 2, hit 3's basket several times, chained out on 4, aced 6, hit basket on 8, chained out 11, basket on 16, aced 17. I've worn that course out over the years of high school and college.

No aces yet in charlotte but I have eagled hole 2 at renny gold

^ you hit 14 yet? That's the one I always wanted. It was the last one I ever birdied. Who knows how many times I've birdied it now though.

I remember back in high school throwing a sidewinder on hole 2... those were the days

i actually did hit the basket on 14 earlier this year. last month i think...skipped up near the basket and slammed into the basket...that came about a week after i got 4 aces in 5 days out there

I don't think that was possible Kevin. The sidewinder didn't come out until after I moved from Raleigh and you were in college then.

I have a weight question. I hurt my rotator cuff so I've started driving forehand to reduce stress on the shoulder. What changes would I experience throwing a heavy disc (170ish) vs. a light one (150-155ish) on a forehand drive. Right now, I throw a 172 gram champ roadrunner. I really like its understable characteristics, so I don't want to move to a Boss or Groove or anything like that. Would a lighter disc give me more distance? At what cost? If it matters I throw 300-350.

^ i throw firebird sidearm and usually a 170 ish. However, I off axis torque a lot on mine, so you might want another opinion.

^^ you have me thinking. I wish I knew when they came out. The point was more that I used to throw driver off the teepad and now I have to club down on a putter.

" No aces yet in charlotte "

I had a double-ace round at the new course in south Charlotte last week. 521/Elon Park, at Ardrey Kell and Hwy 521. It's really kind of a yawner of a course. Very comparable to Kentwood. Great for beginners, but anyone good feels like killing yourself if you don't shoot at least 7 or 8 under. One of my aces was off a skip - first time I've ever had that happen. The second one was just straight in, and lucky it hit or else I'd have been 60 feet past the basket.
The course is super short and only challenging on a few holes. There are two tee pads for every hole, but quite frankly, I find them to be a waste of concrete. There's the easy amateur pads, and then there's the "pro" pads that are the exact same fucking hole, but 30 feet longer.
But whatever. A course is a course. It's better to have one there than not. And it's easy, so I suppose I should just shut my mouth and let the beginner players have fun out there.

And then there's Squirrel Lake, the other course that's close to where I live. That one sucks too. Much harder, but still not a good course. "Let's put a tee pad here, a basket over there, and then not bother to cut any fairway between the two." Blind turns with random trees in the middle of the fairway after the turn. Tons of trees just smack in the middle of the fairway. Etc. Not my type of course at all.

I went down to Charlotte to play. Orignally we were going to play The Web and drive up and play Stumpy's Creek. However after our 3.5 hour round at The Web we decided to check out Skilbourne(Kilbourne Long).

Verdict...don't waste your time playing the long pins at Kilbourne...not worth the time. I would have prefered to play a round at Reedy Creek or even Sugaw Creek than to have wasted a half a day at Kilbourne.

i could have told you that. skillbourne is a good course (kilbourne) with an excuse to put baskets longer and in the woods with no fairway. Which makes it stink. If they would clear out some trees in certain places and did some things, it could be better.

The web is a beast. I still haven't gotten around to liking it, but it's way better than skillbourne.

My favorite courses in Charlotte are as follows in order.

1) Hornet's Nest
2) Renny Gold
3) Killbourne
4) Renny Orig.
5) Hornet's Web
6) Reedy

and then I don't really like much else

and if it was in charlotte, i would put winthrop lake between 3 and 4. and winthrop gold after renny gold.

I have a question

I just started to play disc golf a month ago with a friend of mine who has been playing for a while. It is really fun and I like it because it is free (I grew up playing golf which is def. not free)

I went and bought two discs: An Innova Valkyrie Driver and an Innova Aviar putt and approach.

For someone starting out, my question is this: What other discs should I get or do I really need to get my score down. My best score now is +7 (at Valley Springs in Durham) and would like to get lower (obviously).

Thanks

You'd probably want to pick up a midrange. I'd suggest a discraft buzz. It's a great disc for someone starting out, and if you'll like it you'll probably be throwing it forever. A good alternative would be an innova Roc.

You'll get many different answers to that question, but the two old mid-range standbys that are always great for beginners are Rocs and Sharks.

I haven't played it, but I saw some of the holes while it was still being built. It looked stupid as hell. Like they just stuck the baskets in the ground with no regard for how the disc is actually supposed to get there. Just a basket stuck way back behind a bunch of trees with nothing even resembling a fairway to get there. At that point, skill gets neutralized and the whole damn thing just turns into who's the luckiest player that day.

^^^^it really depends on how much power you have/are you flicking/etc...

if you throw a lot of sidearms i would suggest getting a wraith or destroyer(not dx plastic). if you throw backhand you do need a midrange for shorter holes and approach shots. if you can backhand that valk and keep it straight and/or turn it over i would suggest a roc. if you are having trouble with the valk and it goes left hard on you then i would go with a buzzz. a cobra would also be a good alternative to the buzzz if you prefer to throw innova product instead. i personally throw both buzzz and roc's, love them both. aviar is a good putter but if you can get your hands on a gateway Wizard putter, imo, they are the best putters. smaller diameter means more target to hit and they have a more pure flight path to the basket when putting.

from experience with trying to help my friends who just started, i saw the most success when they threw some of my beat up roc's.

I like cobra as a good midrange disc- it is what I have most of my Ace's with

if you wanna go with disccraft (the cobra is innova), see if you can find an old MRV (pretty much the same disc... actually seemed slightly more stable, but you can still turn it over if you need to)- I can't remember what they replaced it with though

^^^ My recommendation is to find something newer and easier to find than 11x Firebirds. I used to throw 10x rocs, but made the switch to ching rocs b/c they were sky-rocketing in price. Ching rocs are just as flat, just have to switch them out slightly more often since they get beatup quicker.

^ PM sent.

In light of that, here's my entire collection. Used to play regularly, but notso much anymore. Wouldn't mind getting rid of a few of these. Make an offer if interested. In general knock ~$3 off anything new from the sticker price, more if it's used (depending on the condition).

On Monday, Ashe County Park, hole 12 am. Good fast low shot, "come on come on gimme a big skip big skip big skip" THUD!

That fucker was stuck under that root. Probably took 20-30 lbs of force to pull it out. No damage to the disc, though!

word. just played there a few weeks ago for the first time. best course in the state easily and the best course ive played to date. i think i shot a blind +1 from the pro tees. lookin at scores in the tourney they had last year it was near 1000 rated. i was shocked since i didnt think i played all that great. took a 6 on hole 3 haha. shot even par on the back 9 though is what prob did it. the back 9 was much tougher than the front 9

I've only played a dozen or so times, but about half of those have been freestyle on NC State's campus late at night over summer's when no one is out there. It's great. Just did it a few weeks ago. Obviously I'm not very good considering the number of times I've played but its still fun.

+1 (62) from the pro tees is amazing on that course, especially for a first timer. The course record from the pros is -7 (54) by Henry Childres at last year's Throwdown.

The High Country Throwdown is July 11-12. Register online:

I just completed building a virtual tour of the Ashe Park Course. Maps and photos of every hole. (Don't make fun of the crappy html - it's still a work in progress!)
Click on the red arrows for photographs. Click the expand icon in the upper left of each photograph for a larger version. Scroll wheel zooms in when you're in expanded mode. Click and drag the photo to pan.

East Wake Middle is decent. There are two sets of pads on most holes.

The other course in Knightdale wasn't that great when I was there. No one took care of it and the grass was grown up.

I think the teepads are installed at Middle Creek in Apex

Yeah, I heard one of those was missing baskets and was grown up. It's probably the one in knightdale you are referring to.

How hard are UNC and Buckhorn compared to Cedar Hills? I usually shoot around 60 at Cedar Hills as a point of reference.

^^ To me, none of the 9-hole courses are worth your time.

Valley Springs in Durham is a favorite of mine, especially after they put in 4 extra holes, which actually are part of the 18-hole blue, pro-level course, (the blue course skips hole #'s 3-6). It's tougher than Kentwood but easier than Buckhorn. A good test of your ability IMO.

Cornwallis is a very short course that's could for testing your short game and accuracy. Very tight in spots, it's still a course I enjoy playing every now and then.

UNC is more of a long thrower's course, so it's a nice change of pace for the area. If it's rained recently, watch when you walk across the open grass areas on the front nine. It'll get real muddy.

I highly recommend venturing out to Burlington too. They have two course next to each other. Valley Springs is a shorter version of valley springs, while Cedar Hills is a big throwers paradise. Nice and open except for a select few holes. Great opportunity to test your drivers.
