OK, here's the answer as simplest as I can give it:

Basic mammal biology tends towards more aggressive males. Yeah, there are exceptions with certain species, but the trend holds overall.

Aggressive males can fend off competition -- for females, for food, for territory, whatever.

Females whose reproductive priorities are more simplistic will tend towards that sort of behavior. A man who will hit a woman is, in the unconscious evolutionary theory, more likely to hit threatening people.

When you're not in reproductive mode, you realize that these males are what we who are in intelligence mode call "douchebags." They are to primitive to function properly in civilized life, and either their behavior should be destroyed, or they should be. Frankly, I couldn't give two shits how that works out, but that's just me.

Your friend is falling into a primitive pattern. Most likely they could, with the appropriate information, be rescued from that ancient mode of thought. Unfortunately, it's unlikely that the superior mode of thinking can be presented to them in a manner that they can receive and truly understand.

If you are going to sling around insults, at least try to understand the basic definitions. Douchebags are the guys that most women, like you, go for when they are in college. Mainly because they dress preppy, say and do cliche things, and have no real identity, not unlike their significant others. They are walking and talking mutating commericalized robots with no spine or self-respect. Sound familiar? Women are vain creatures, and men that join them in their voyage of vanity lack dignity and change their self-image with the changing of the wind, and as a result become your next boyfriend.

Women stay with men who beat them in order to maintain the social status they have gained from the relationship. They justify abuse by calling in love, which is really a veil for their own self-esteem issues that launched them into a false partnership from the start. It's all very complex, but it boils down to women would leave these types of relationships if they focused more on the individual and less on public perception. Women cling to status, vanity, image, and perception. If they did not, they would be much happier people.

There are a lot of reasons. Just general low self-esteem. Depression, mental illness, etc... Lack of means. Genuine and legitimate fear for their life. Pressure from family, etc...to stay. Love.

Physical abuse is really bad because it poses an immediate threat to your well-being, but emotional and verbal abuse shouldn't be overlooked. They all tend to go hand-in-hand, except in the case of abusive women who tend to rely largely on the emotional and verbal abuse. I think it's hilarious that when men finally snap and hit their abusive women, the men get labelled as the abusers.

I have violent outbursts, but I've gotten really good at hitting things, not people. The only problem is these urges only come along like once every few years so I don't really get a chance to practice handling them properly (I hit too many things and scare people).
