2) you probably are proactive about keeping from getting sick

It just boggles my mind how some folks can't be bothered with basic shit like regular hand-washing (since I got serious about this, I went from being sick 7-8 times a year to about once a year), eating well, fighting off colds (sleep + fruits and veggies and exercise), and the like.
And then when they're sick, they STILL don't take care of themselves. Some actively make it worse, although not intentionally.

Of course, since they fail to realize their behavior is playing a role in how often they get sick, they see no reason why they shouldn't get a free pass on their obligations and lots of sympathy.

My 'project manager' is a classic case. Over the past year, she's been here MAYBE 70% (I keep a log) of working days, and the company won't fire her because they refuse to pay unemployment. They don't get that one non-performing employee costs them way more in the long run in lost productivity than firing her and hiring a competent replacement. Just this afternoon I got the following email.

There are obvious reasons for why some folks get sick and some folks don't. Some folks get one sniffle and think they're sick so that's what they tell people when they're not sick by your standards. Some people do have poor hand washing habits and whatnot. Some people work in environments where they are exposed to an especially large amounts of germs. And some people have weaker, less developed immune systems.

Regardless, you are really, really reaching here. Are you seriously so desperate to judge people that you're criticizing them for getting sick? I mean, this shit's practically pathological.

this helps more than people give it credit for.

a study was done in the UK (if i remember correctly) where they analyzed a very, very large representative subset of the population... they looked at their eating/exercise/smoking habits.

those that ate appropriate servings of fruits/vegetables every day, exercised daily, and didn't smoke lived, on average, 40% longer than other subtypes. this was regardless of weight, height, or sex.

yeah, think about it - things aren't sterile once they come in contact with a non-sterile environment.

think of your bladder as a hermetically sealed container. your blood is (usually) sterile, your kidneys filter your blood, urine is a byproduct of this... therefore, urine is (usually) sterile.

if something manages to start growing up your urethra or jam itself far enough back (or retarded hospital personnel put in foleys without knowing what the hell they're doing), you end up with a UTI, and your urine isn't sterile anymore.

if you leave urine sitting out, it's a pretty awesome medium for growing all sorts of bacteria and fungi.


definitely touching the door handle on your way out.
if you have decent personal hygiene habits, there shouldn't really be anything growing around your dick that's harmful except maybe some staph/strep, but you can find those on almost every exposed skin surface on your body.
the door handle, however, is a different situation.

always open it with a paper towel if you can't push it open with your back... i always look strange when i wash my hands because i use scrub technique

this. Untill I did this, and started eating enough, sleeping enough, drinking enough water, etc. I was sick all the damn time. I haven't been sick but maybe 2x in the last several years, and they were not for long--2 day colds, etc.
