To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women.

No wait, that's the meaning of life.
I've got nothing.

I thought it was just a link to Sisyphus.

I'll have to read the essay. Looks interesting.

my altruistic and idealistic purpose
happiness. it's that simple. i feel the best way to achieve it is by doing whatever makes you happy as long as you don't infringe on the happiness of others. if we all lived by that simple notion, i feel there would be no serious problems in the world. think about it. just one example would be the absolute elimination crime, because committing a crime infringes on someone's happiness. actually, there would be no need for laws, or governments for that matter.

no greed. no lies. no hunger. no fighting or wars. no hate. no control. no abuse. no competition. no money. for those who think there would be no advances in technology, medicine, quality of life, etc... there are inventors, doctors, etc. who do what they do purely for the betterment of mankind. they'd be free to help all of us without the restrictions of financing, bureaucracy, and other needless obstacles. people could chose whatever roles they'd like, so if you like farming, you'd be able to provide substanance for all of us. those who like art can create. scholars can research. architects will design, while builders build.

you may also counter by arguing that some are intrinsically "evil" and prone to murder, rape, and pillage. i don't believe people are born with a "murder gene", or the like. i feel these urges are nurtured by environmental and circumstantial factors. if you can accept this, then you should also accept that my utopian way of life would prevent such peoples from ever even developing. how could there be an selfishness, anger, powertrips, etc. if no one is ever offended, restricted, or violated?

i understand this is an impossible dream, and it requires putting a lot of faith in people, but it doesn't stop me from striving to live my life this way. i welcome your rebuttals, because it's fun engaging in dialogues. it helps me to further develop my understanding and reasoning, and hopefully yours too.

my biological and more reasonable purpose
procreate and live as long as possible, but not be immortal. that's our biological instinct that drives all that we do. the pursuit of wealth and material possessions, power, education, etc. all comes back to attracting mates. we makes strides in medicine to keep us healthy (to attract mates) and to live longer. at the same time, we understand and accept that we can't live forever. immortality and procreation are naturally conflicted (we'd run out of space and the ability to support life if no one died).

i could go on writing like a million words, but i don't want to and i know you don't want me to either.

dennis brown - "if this world were mine" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcbOwuByy_g
slightly stoopid's cover http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehrcEYM4mA0

roger waters and flea are two of my favorite bassists.
