I have recently inherited an old semi-auto rifle. Fairly good condition, but it is not in prestine shape. The internals have a little surface rust here and there, but seems like nothing out of the ordinary. I have read online in a couple different places to use toilet acid in order to remove this surface rust.Worried about a few things. Whether or not the removal of the surface rust on the internals of the gun will make it not work anymore, then you end up having to take it to a gunsmith? Is acid really the best way? The barrel is not stainless, just black. What should i do with that? Remove all the finish and then repaint it? and with what? Please, if anyone has any experience with this kind of stuff, let me know. I will also pay per hour if someone wants to do this, experience required.

I restored one of these a while back.Barrels are usually blued(spelling?), which is basically just a controlled oxidation. There's a two part chemical to refinish them, sold at wal-mart.The rest of the gun was painted in my case, so I stripped it and repainted it. My internals were fine, so no experience on removing rust there. However, I have used various acids like hyrdocloric to remove rust in general. They work but the parts quickly flash rust again. You probably want some form of phosphoric acid to neutralize the rust.As for the stock, well that's just woodworking. Sand it down, stain it, apply a sealant. I used that polyurethane in can, just misted on a half dozen coats until I was satisfied with it.

Honestly, chit chat isn't the best place to get advice on anything remotely serious.Try this thread:message_topic.aspx?topic=503107&page=44

if you want it to look nice, have the barrel professionally reblued. i know an excellent gunsmith in wayne county who has the proper equipment if you're willing to drive. he's one of the best in the state.
