I've been converting MKVs to WMV's to watch in 720p for a few months now with Windows Media Encoder 9, however there seems to be no way to convert it with subtitles (I downloaded a Japanese series and need the English subtitles)

anyways, is there any way to hardcode subtitles into a WMV? I've searched forums for hours and can't seem to find any clear program/solution

I've extracted the .ass and .srt files from the MKV, have a finished encoded .WMV without the subtitles, I need a way to either combine them or encode the MKV to WMV and include the subtitles

any help would be appreciated

well its japanese audio, and i need english subtitles hardcoded so I don't have to watch them on the computer

so if there is a way to do it, I have been trying for days to figure it out/get it to work

any help would be appreciated

What are you watching them on that takes WMV files but doesn't read subtitle files?

Even the $40 Walmart special I bought for my parents a couple of weeks ago reads subtitle files just fine. SRTs and SUB files.

Install ffdshow. Configure ffdshow to decode whatever codec it's encoded with. Open the "Video decoder configuration" from the ffdshow group in the start menu. Check "Subtitles" on the left column. Click ok.

Now the default DirectShow graph will decode subtitles. (i.e. any application that uses DirectShow to automatically render the file will show subtitles, applications that build their own graphs will be unaffected).

Encode with Windows Media Encoder.

If you prefer you can install and configure DirectVobSub instead.

I installed that application, but it would only code in 2 channel audio for some reason and had no option to switch it

I figured out how to get the subtitles hardcoded by using Nic's WMenc with AVIscript and ffdshow/vobsub - but the 4:3 picture is too big on the TV and the picture gets cut off on the top and bottom, cutting off half of the subtitles

now I am trying to figure out how to change the aspect ratio or zoom out the picture a bit within the encode, the only thing that is working so far is changing the output resolution to something stupid like 720x300 instead of 720x480 but I wish I knew how to change the vertical position of the subtitles or the ratio of the image within the file, or make it not cut off some of the image from the top and bottom

To be fair, I have to do it when I watch foreign stuff on my iPod Touch (though if there's something that lets me watch MKV's without having to rebuild the file, I'd appreciate it).

I am actually using CoreAVC to encode the video, not ffdshow - which could be the problem with the aspect ratio

Do you really need words you can't understand to be in 5.1?

I hear that legal dvd's come with subtitles sometimes. Might want to look into that.
