Ok, quick question for the sake of argument... (you can tell I'm not a math/engineer person).

Say the world has 700 million cars, each with a tailpipe of two inches in diameter. How large (area wise - square miles preferably) would the tailpipe be if you combined all of these into one?

does not compute.

you give us a linear measurement (diameter) and you want us to give you the surface area of the pipes combined...?

not possible. to answer it, we need to know the area of one pipe.

(and we have to assume all cars have identical tailpipes)

or are you asking the area of the opening?

that can be done.

He didnt ask for surface area...other wise he would have given you a length...

=700000000*PI()*(0.08333/5280)^2

That verifies what I got. I had argued with someone who said the diameter was 1.4 billion inches across and thus it had an area of 48,000 miles or something.

of course this excludes the small area in between all the 700MM tailpipes' exterior surfaces

Hmm. I must be dumb because I am getting 1.720944 sq miles.

is it not

(Pi * 1^2) * 700,000,000 * 2.49097669 × 10-10 ?

Radius of 1 pipe = 1 inch

Area of opening of 1 pipe = pi sq inches

Area of opening of 700 mil combined pipes = 700,000,000*pi sq inches

Area in sq feet = 15,271,631

Area in sq yards = 1,696,848

Area in sq miles = 0.548

= a square 0.74 miles on a side

= a circle 0.835 miles in diameter

i hope you people can do it without using a conversion site/table.

yeah, he didn't say surface area, but he did say this:

Quote :
"(you can tell I'm not a math/engineer person)."

and if anybody had any brains, and they were asked "How large -- area wise -- would the tailpipe be", they should think of surface area of the whole object. if you want to know the area of just one face/surface of the object, you should say it explicitly.

^ haha... you still arguing? leave it to those who know.

i knew exactly what the OP meant

math folks can't see the forest for the trees.

I am not the only one who thought it. Shadowrunner did too, and he is damn smart from what I know.

If I gave you a rectangular box open on one end and said "What is the area of this?", what are you going to give me? The area of the opening, or the area of the whole box?

So what's the difference between a box and a cylinder? Just the shape. The concepts of surface area still apply.

just because i use a quicker tool to convert something doesn't mean i can't do it on my own

this isn't MY math problem, so why waste too much of MY time to do it? plus i wanted to get the answer before anyone else
