A phone message and an e-mail to her Miami-based attorney, Jordan Lewin, weren't returned. Dinsmore told police in February that she had been working long hours at her school and spent a lot of time at her boyfriend's house. Police said she also went on a family camping trip while the cats starved. She said she couldn't remember the last time she had been home, but thought she had left food and water for her cats. Dinsmore is not teaching this week because schools are closed for Spring Break, school district spokeswoman Vickie Middlebrooks said. She couldn't say whether Dinsmore would be permitted to return to the Boynton Beach middle school when classes resume. "The school district will open up a personnel investigation based on the state attorney's action," Middlebrooks said. "The district will examine all of the facts." Dinsmore has worked at Congress Middle since August 2007 and has a clean employment record, according to the district. Her salary is listed as $36,100. The two cats were found dead Feb. 23 by a manager at Boca Sol apartments. Police said Dinsmore hadn't paid rent, and a manger went to her home to talk to her and check out the apartment. The manager found the two dead cats, signs of a frenzied search for food and water, and feces and urine everywhere, according to police. The smell was so bad, an officer had to cover his mouth with a rag when he first went inside, the report said. A necropsy determined the cats suffered neglect for weeks or months before dying a slow, painful death from starvation and dehydration. I am an animal lover, and yes, I find that to be horrible.

However, there are humans who do this to humans (harm by neglect), and there are humans who actively harm animals, and finally, there are humans who actively harm other humans.

So as you see, this is towards the bottom of the scale when it comes to human cruelty. Your faith in humanity should have disappeared a long time ago after catastrophes such as 9/11, Abu Ghraib, forced renditions, Guantanamo, 7/7, George Bush, etc.

That said, while I believe the female human in question deserves to be punished, at most a year each, this belief brings up a curious question in my head: is it not the natural state of animals in nature absent predators to die of starvation?

How can you forget to water/feed YOUR pet??? I would hate for her to have been inconvienced by taking 30 mins to stop by her apartment. 30 mins, even if once a week, of less getting dick from her b/f the misery! Besides how does one go a month w/o going back to your place to get new clothes or need something else out of your place....

I'd expect this out of LeAnn waffle house waitress trailer trash but not a fucking teacher.

This brings up so many questions. How do you forget to feed cats for a month? If you were intentionally trying to kill your cats, wouldn't you at least attempt to hide the evidence or put it in a freezer or something? Why would you let cats just poop and piss and claw everything to shreds anyway? I think they need to just start making stuff up to charge her with.

The landlord should sue her for damage to the apartment. Hopefully he can bankrupt her in preparation for getting out of prison.

Good for you, but you are not the one who said that you had almost lost your faith in humanity because of two cats dying due to extreme neglect and imprisonment. So, that comment of mine was directed only at the OP.

And I don't know where I implied that she shouldn't be prosecuted or punished. No one actually said that I did, but it was implied by some of the posts that I had implied that she shouldn't be punished. Yes, she should be punished. I would say a couple of years would suffice, plus a 100 hours of forced volunteering at an animal shelter/clinic. And yes, she should lose her job and perhaps be barred from teaching for a couple to few years.

All I was commenting on was the OP saying he had almost lost faith in humanity due to this incident. If this incident is enough for you to almost lose faith in humanity, you shouldn't have any faith left to begin with, as you should have lost it all due to massive crimes committed by some humans which are infinitely worse than this one.

Anyway, it is all semantics and hyperbole, so it is OK.

The cats destroyed property that wasn't hers and she was negligent in taking care of them to the point they died. While technically considered property, animals are given their own class of rights separately enumerated from other property in the eyes of the law.

Pet stores get shut down for sub-standard conditions for combinations of public health issues and the health of the animals.

Cats are treated differently than, say, a chicken or other livestock (there are a lot of laws regulating the condition of livestock) that you may want to eat but both are subject to the same cruelty statutes.

This is for NC, but other states are similar.

I don't necessarily agree with the felony charges, but in this case I think she was being criminally negligent. Slap a misdemeanor on that and move along!

A farmer can get arrested for planting without a quota. As such, if the legislature chooses to make it a crime to allow a cat to come to harm, such law is not the penacle of offense.

Yes, in a world filled with cars and hunters where populations are kept in check, starvation is rare; all it takes is the ability to search for food.

However, before humans were around to play predator, animal populations would soon exceed the food supply and starvation would come first to the old and injured, sure, but also the young and unlucky. Afterall, in such a world only the most lucky would be well fed, the majority of the population would subsist on just enough food to stay alive and keep looking for food, never enough to rest. So, which is really worse, starving to death in a month, or slowely starving with just enough food to keep you in malnourished misery for years until the next drought or disease causes enough of the population to finally settle upon death for food supplies to become sufficient, but only until the next generation comes alone to join the malnourished cycle.

It's not that the cats died, it's that the woman was grossly unconscionable enough to neglect them for an entire month. It's about correcting for the woman's behavior, so that she, and society at large, knows it's not okay to be grossly negligent, whether that's with raising your own pets, or stewarding the education of students. It's the next best thing to being able to put people in jail for just being plain stupid. I don't think any of you would argue that this woman is either very, very stupid or has some mental disorder to do what she did.

There's an agency issue, here. When animals starve in the wild, it's no one's fault but nature. When someone through either cruelty or negligence inflicts starvation (and dehydration) upon animals in their charge, they're responsible.

One can't do a whole lot about nature. But they have a responsibility to humanely care for animals under their charge; if they can't or won't, then they shouldn't have them in the first place.

I don't think it's asking a lot of people to demand that they treat animals humanely and with compassion.
