Can someone who has taken this class please tell me what the attendance policy is. I am thinking about taking it with Kelly over the summer but its at 8am. Not sure I want to do that if I have to be there every day. 3/31/2009 6:30:55 PM |

I had Kelly. He's a stickler for attendance. I can't quite remember the policy. I think it's after 2 abscences he takes a point off final grade or something. It harsh! trust me. I didn't miss any days. I imagine over the summer he'll be even more strict.
Also, he tells his class about how "we used to do it in the good ol' days". It gets old fast. If you don't like it when people talk to you like that, be warned. The class started out slow with basic drawing concepts. I'd much rather use solidworks than a pencil, so this was excruciating for me. He's an old timer who wants you to "appreciate how we did it back in the day with our pencils and paper." That also gets old as he wastes alot of time on that stuff. Once you get into solidworks, if you're good at it, going to class is very pointless. I was bored mostly every day because I got the hang of the program early. Take this into consideration. It sounds like you might want another prof. 3/31/2009 6:43:51 PM |

I took it with pope spring 06 and he was pretty chill. the attendance policy was i think miss 2 days and you lose points off final grade (only had it once a week then though). The reason why you have to go is because you do actual work in class, and are rarely lectured (Which is good, and this was one of the more enjoyable classes i've taken in my entire ncsu career).

^^ He's right, you will do some work in class. GC 120 was also one of my favorite classes I've taken at NCSU 3/31/2009 8:44:29 PM |

When I took GC 120 in 2000 we used Autocad and had to turn in hand drawn orthographic schematics of our final projects in addition to the Autocad drawn orthographic schematics and 3D isometric renderings. I was just glad that I had a few years of experience drafting by hand. 4/1/2009 5:01:58 PM |

Unless its within the past year they've switched back, they are contracted to using solidworks for GC120. 4/1/2009 11:16:32 PM |

Though you can now get ProE to try for yourself (student version). I asked Kelly when in GC 120 why we didn't teach ProE instead, and he said because we can't get a discounted student edition. So maybe it'll change? SolidWorks seems to be going strong though. 4/1/2009 11:18:50 PM |

i took it with Hart last year. he is the most chill dude ever. we had class one night a week for 3 or 4 hours. sometimes we'd get to class and he'd be like "well, this week's assignment is just like last week's. if you understood last week's, turn it in and leave. if you didn't, stick around and i'll help you." so that made it a 5 minute class.
however, even as chill as he was, there was a strict attendance policy. i think you only got 2 absences before they started slashing your grade. 4/2/2009 7:16:53 AM |

Ha, I remember having to learn all that pencil and paper stuff for that class. We spent the first two weeks writing numbers and letters. 4/2/2009 11:48:45 AM |

^^ If you ever do anything drafting or modeling based for a living you'll realize that it's a valuable skill. 4/2/2009 12:29:09 PM |
