But what creates the vacuum?

the lifting of the chamber

it would be exactly the same on a space-shuttle, with no gravity

incidentally, it would be pretty cool to hotbox a spaceship

I thought about it for a while and the process in question is while the bottle fills with smoke. First I thought maybe gravity made the water in the bottle go down but then I thought about it. If you cover the lid it won't go down. The air being forced into it from the "vacuum" is what causes the water to go down. No gravity.

Hmmmm, but if the water is level there is no vacuum...Is there a vacuum or does gravity cause the vacuum

if there was no gravity the densities of air and water would be irrelevant, perhaps only their momentum could be called into question. in any case, in the absence of gravity, any volume of air pulled in through the bowl would transferred to the mouth through the water/air chamber but instead containing an essentially equal volume consisting of water, air, and oxidized weeeed/thc, ash, whatever happened to make it to your lips. Your vacuum principle still exists, and a gravity bong is aptly named.

Well Density is mass/volume and neither mass nor volume is effected by gravity.
Still don't know if gravity is involved.

Think about it. The gravity acts on the water, which creates the "vacuum pressure". That would not work without gravity unless the whole system was air-tight except for the bowl. For example: if you squeezed some air out from a 3-liter bottle (a solid bottle, not one with the bottom cut off,) and capped it with a bowl and allowed the bottle to re-shape itself (like an ear syringe,) it would create "vacuum pressure" and you could light the bowl and pull a hit -- no gravity needed. However, in a gravity bong, two containers are used -- a large one with a large opening on one end, (essentially a bucket,) and a smaller container with a large and small opening. The larger container (open side up) holds water, and the water is held there by gravity. The smaller container (large open side down) is lowered into the water, a bowl is put on the small opening, then when you pull it up, the water is pulled down by gravity, creating the "vacuum pressure" that causes air to get pulled through the bowl on the small opening -- which should be lit at that point. Without gravity, the water would tend to float up and out and generally not stay in the large container to begin with. Even if it did, pulling the other open container out wouldn't create "vacuum pressure" because nothing is holding the water in place. The water would just move with the container. Now, if the whole thing were sealed tight, like the first example, "vacuum pressure" would be created, but no gravity bong is sealed tight. Thus....

I disagree...this is getting ridiculous, but I disagree with this statement

the water would stay more or less where it was, so long as nobody applied any force to it

Okay, I see your point now. A gravity bong does, to some extent, rely on gravity.
