Alright heres the deal I bought a bike its older (1995) (honda magna 750 12000 miles) So at some point in its life it sat for some time for those miles to be that low, it runs good and strong but I have a carb problem that refuse to be fixed...
gas is leaking from the carbs when its sitting for a bit, I figured something wrong with the floats, or varnish or something on the valves, the shop replaced the lil valves on top of the floats. worked fine for a week. now 1 of the 4 carbs is leaking again. The shop basically said if its not the float valve then it must be pitting on the carb assembly not allowing the valve to make a good seat. They want to put jb weld in there and grind it out smooth (good idea?)
also I've noticed the petcock valves (has 2 an auto vacum petcock and a manual one off the tank) must not be working /shot. for gas to even be able to get to the bike when its off and sitting.
any constructive/helpful thoughts into this issue? Thanks guys 4/4/2009 7:49:01 PM |

i had a 97 magna for a few years, went through the carbs twice, and its just a fact of life, especially with a full tank, get in the habit of turning your petcock to off when you cut it off and you won't have anymore problems
the float setup is very difficult on those, i doubt just any shop could do it right, the seat is replaceable, so that shouldn't be an issue, it is also possible that you have a float that is filling with gas, also check your bowl vent lines, if a line is pluggeded, then the pressure from the fuel will force its way into the jet without air pressure relief above the float

ok see thats what I thought to , i'll fix the petcocks. but as far as the float valves don't the needles seat against some sort rubber oring? if thats the case how else would gas get around the valves? thanks for the reply man 4/4/2009 8:12:51 PM |

very simple carbs, very difficult to get on and off
there are a lot of fuel and vent hose fittings, make sure your leak isn't in one of them, if your float needle was leaking, it should run out of the vent hose under the bike if it is hooked up right, or into the intake through the jet
the auto petcock rarely works right, so unhook the fuel outlet line from the vacuum petcock and with the main one on, you should have no flow, pull off the vacuum line and suck on it, and you should get flow then
then take your fuel line off the tank petcock, and see if it holds in the off position
there is no way even a new carb will hold back the fuel, it originally had only a manual petcock, people never cut them off and complained, so they also put a vacuum one on the V45 750's

some people downplay the magnas, but they can be hell on wheels with some simple top end upgrades and they have damn near a cult following 4/4/2009 8:48:21 PM |
