So I switched from TWC for inet/TV over to AT&T for inet and Dish Network for TV. AT&T was doing $125 to switch service providers but the customer service rep said I had to get at least a local line to get this service and then said I could drop the phone as soon as I got the rebate. I get my first bill, and I see this shit

1. Community Caller Plus Ind Line 19.95
Total Surcharges and Other Fees 7.11
Total Government Fees and Taxes 10.18
Total Plans and Services 37.24

The taxes and fees on a basic land line is nearly 100%. Un fucking believable.

I was also under the impression that the DSL modem was going to be free (either up front or after some rebate). They currently have this on their website:

Then I see my bill for the DSL and this is there:

Then, below that
1. Purchase - 1 of 10 installments 10.00

WTF is that? I call customer service and the guy informs me he gets tons of questions about these two lines and says that the modem isn't free but rather it is an interest free loan for it that they break out into $10 payments each month.

Shit like this just blows my mind. I should have known that AT&T wasn't any less evil than Time Warner. The only thing they have going for them is the DSL seems to be more consistently hitting the speeds they advertise than TWC did.

I've already gotten it all resolved, $200 worth in rebates and overcharges fixed, it's just a massive amount of horseshit to have to be on the phone for over an hour today getting it all squared away.

And the taxes/fees on the phone line are really unprecedented. Fortunately, I don't need it and will be dropping it as soon as the rebates come in.
