And what were they like? And how did they kill themselves? I think it would be interesting to get a broad view of what sorts of people commit suicide, and why they do it. I suppose it is a bit disrespectful to be talking about suicides so cavalierly, but in my opinion when you commit suicide you forfeit many of the rights to decency that other dead people enjoy.

So, I have known three suicides.

Suicide #1 was a friend I had when I was a little kid; I heard a couple years ago that he had hanged himself, I think because his girlfriend broke up with him and his life was generally going nowhere. I hadn't seen him in years, but must admit that I wasn't all that surprised when I got the news. He was always a little bit crazy. When we were about 8-9 years old, he went up to this railroad tie in which some bees had made a nest, and started whacking at flying bees with a hammer. I said "Hey, the bees are gonna sting you" and he replied "I'm gonna sting the bees!" You can guess how that story ended. Also, he was rather unpopular in middle school, though I don't know how his high school career went.

Suicide #2 was this kid who was in the Math Department at N.C. State. He was one of those snide intellectual types. He would sit in the front row of classes and ask questions whose only purpose seemed to be to demonstrate how smart he was, and would use archaic mathematical terms. Also, his Facebook profile was very cocky. Anyway, about a year ago I heard that he offed himself, I don't know how. I believe it was because he applied to a bunch of really prestigious graduate schools, and they all rejected him. It has always seemed to me that he might have waited a year and then applied to some less prestigious programs, but hey, it was his life.

Suicide #3 was Stiletto. I only met him once, but he struck me as really the most nice, likeable and genuine guy I had met in a long time. I was outside of Wolf Village having a cig with a couple other people, and this tall Asian kid with long hair walked up. He said he was trying to meet up with someone from the Wolfweb; we told him that none of us was that person, but we got into a conversation with him. I took to him immediately because there seemed to be absolutely no pretense and no cockiness about him. I always remembered him and was pretty damned sad when I heard the news.

So bring the morbidity, TWW!

My cousin shot himself in the chest when he was 16 (I was 14 at the time). His parents had been separated for some time, and he thought it was his fault (he'd had a DUI or something and thought the fight over that caused it). He called them both up, told them to come home as quickly as they could, then pulled the trigger as his dad walked through the door.

My best friend's uncle shot himself in the woods behind his house when he was about 27yo (we were like 10yo at the time).

My uncle shot himself years ago after he and my aunt split up, though they officially called it an "accident" saying he was "cleaning his gun".

i've known about a handful. in no particular order the ones i remember off the top of my head

About middle school age one of my good friend's older brother shot himself with a shotgun in his bedroom over a girl. They were in high school. That one shook the school up pretty bad.

I think it was 1-2 years later another one of my really really good friend's older brother shot himself in the same manner for the same reason.

A kid in my neighborhood i lived in till around the time I was 5-6 hanged himself in his parents' shed. No real impact for me, but i remember the older kids talking about it.

Another older brother of a kid in my grade about 3 years ago...I can't really remember how or why but he was pretty introverted.

There are a couple more that I know will spring into my head throughout the night.

ah yeah, none of us will ever believe or consider this suicide but one of my really close friends died of a drug overdose about 4 years ago after mixing some Rx meds to fight off pneumonia. People began speculating it was suicide because of his history of bi-polar disorders and what not, but I can say without doubt he would have never done it intentionally. Either way, his death really shook us. He was the closest friend I had lost at that point.

of course you would consider it a suicide if you did it on purpose

I've only known one that succeed and a few that failed. Although when I rode EMS I witnessed the aftermath of a few.

Chick I was in the army with shot herself in the heart with a pistol her dad had given her, her note said "that's where it hurts". Can't remember the exact details

Went on a call with a guy laying on his kitchen floor with his lower jaw all over the walls and a shotgun beside him, he was still alive, can't remember if he lived or not. But he was alive when we took him to the hospital.

I was doing clinicals at the psych ward of a hospital and met a guy that had 2 scars, one under his chin and one under his eye. He tried killing himself with a .22 rifle.

Only tdub ones and ex's relative though it wasn't while we were dating, I only remember it because the men in his family have really bad luck...

I hope to never know someone so miserable that suicide is their only option for relief

well, if you find something like... say 5 times the lethal amount in someone's system, its pretty safe to say. things like time of day, what they were doing, where they were at can give some pretty good clues.

a guy that lived down the road from me when i was a kid literally blew his face off with a shotgun and survived. i ended up getting to know him later, turned out to be pretty well adjusted, married with a couple kids and ran a successful upholstery business.

i was sort of friends with another dude that blew his head off in his bedroom when i was in college. my mom was a friend of the family and had to go help clean up the aftermath.

my great grandfather put the barrel of a rifle in his mouth and pulled the trigger with his toe. apparently there's a trend of suicide in my family, although he's the only one that i'm concretely aware of. it sort of scares me because i've had those thoughts before.

I played baseball with a guy when I was younger who killed himself a couple of years after I last saw him.

If I remember correctly, he raped his sister, broke into a funeral home and destroyed a hearse or two, then hung himself.

I also had a flight instructor in flight school who was going through a divorce. I can't remember the details--his wife took some sort of legal action against him, and he hung himself from a tree in the park.

#1 guy at my HS who I wasnt necessarily friends with but it was not a big school so everyone knew everyone. Happened sophomore year of HS.

#2 was a good friend of mine, junior year of HS. not 100% sure why she did it, but I know her boyfriend at the time treated her like crap. She was so nice and besides being a little quiet never seemed like she would have killed herself.

#3 hurt the most. One of my 3 closest friends from HS - He was going to be my roommate here at NC State until he decided he wanted to stay closer to home and went to UNCC at the last minute. We kinda drifted apart a little bit in college after freshman year. He started getting into drugs and just wasnt hanging around people I wanted to be around most of the time. He ended up offing himself in a parking lot Junior year. That funeral shook me up and I still think about it sometimes .

Four

1. We were in 7th or 8th grade and this girl that lived a block down from me started hanging out with some shaddy people and then her and her b/f comitted suicide together. Really weird how it went down.

2. In 10th grade one of my better female friends shot herself with her dads pistol. She was an incredible girl and I think about her a lot. She started hanging with a few shady characters, but nobody too crazy. One day after a weekend she walked into class crying and wouldn't talk to me at all. Then later that afternoon she shot herself. Her dad found her and she was still alive and we went to the hospital but when we got there they were transferring her to Duke. She died that night. There was never an exact reason given and I still wonder why.

3. Freshman year of college this guy I went to high school with and played soccer with shot himself in the head with a rifle while leaning up against a tree. He had problems with his g/f and up and shot himself out of the blue with his hunting rifle. Really sad funeral.

4. This girl who was two years younger than me, but I was good friends with killed herself my junior year of college. She went off to UNCA and got wrapped up in drugs and intentionally overdosed on pills. Her family still isn't the same.

only one i can remember right now is a cousin of mine who hanged himself. he had been in prison for a long time on drug charges, etc. he finally got out and was staying pretty straight for a while. he got back on drugs. finally went out to the barn and tied his belt to the rafter and kicked whatever he was standing on out from under his feet. we weren't really close. i actually don't recall ever speaking to him.

When I was in about 6th grade, an English teacher at the high school I would later attend's son was at NC State, and he slit his wrists in a bathtub here. I can't remember if it was in a fraternity house, or apt.. . .his name was Nathan Lane. My cousin's husband found him (they weren't married yet). That teacher and I became pretty close.

He did it because his long time girlfriend wouldn't transfer from UNC to State, and she ultimately broke up w/ him.

My cousin Stephanie, whom I grew up with, died of a heroin overdose 4 years ago. . .not sure if it was suicide. That was pretty rough.

I knew a guy in high school who killed himself by blowtorch. I was friends with his brother in high school and most of college.

In the fall of '07, I tried to off myself with maximum strength Tylenol and Vodka one night. When I awoke the next morning, all I could taste and smell was acetaminophen. I didn't want to eat for three days and all I wanted to do on that day was sleep. My roommate said he saw me in a awkward position, like I was dead, before he went to class. Later, he found my suicide note and cried.

It was over a girl and the lost potential to be a college student and the loss of my comedy career and my inability to help my family and make smart financial decisions. In spite of all these reasons, it was very stupid. I think suicide is best summed up by Dr. House: "Living miserably is marginally better than the alternative."

This kid was pretty messed up. I didn't know him personally, but the ol' high school hearsay was that he had a lot of family problems and girl issues and he might have gotten rejected by his top choice for university.

But yeah, blowtorch in his garage.

I rode the bus and played ball with a girl who shot herself in the head her freshman year of HS.

My 2nd cousin also shot himself. He made a video for his parents. Requested to be buried next to my dad, so that he could "Talk to Charlie." And sent flowers to his parents several days after he died.

And I know a few unsuccessful suicides.

My superintendent was going through a divorce. He got sloppy drunk and was chased by the police. He jumps out with a shotgun and gets them to do the deed for him.

I don't understand the people that try to use a .22 or shoot themselves in the heart. Why do firing squads aim for the heart? Clean corpse? Guaranteed kill? Of course, even with a shot to the head you might still have 10 seconds or so to think about the situation. I hear good things about helium asphyxiation, but if you chicken out there's a high likelihood of brain damage.

Well I only know a couple myself.

My great-great uncle lived right around the corner and he lost it after his second wife died of cancer. He took it real hard when his first wife had a heart attack, but after #2, he just went to shit. Wouldn't take care of himself; got to the point my grandparents had to feed him. My grandpa found him with a .22 rifle and used his toe to squeeze it off. Not that much blood. I had to cart the old mattress to the dump.

Guy that I went to school with went out to his hunting area and shot himself with his rifle in the cab of his truck. That one was weird, because nobody really knew he was that depressed or anything.

Also a friend of a friends father offed himself last year in a pretty horrific way. Did it with his table saw. He laid a lot of plastic and shit down though to make it neat and easy for them to clean up. Pretty twisted that he thought of that, but still thought that laying on a saw blade was the best way to deal with the situation.
