I recently compiled a list of slaves my family owned. I even know a few of their names(records are sparse, as you might imagine). I'd guess that men in my direct lineage owned about 150 slaves total. I'm pretty sure that any number greater than 0 makes us dicks. Or them dicks, anyway. If it's any consolation, we lost the majority of our wealth and land in the depression. What goes around...

Census records give you a glimpse every 10 years. Age, household, occupation, etc. Slave records usually just list the age and owner. Earlier than the 19th century you have to rely on land deeds and last will&testaments to get a similar snapshot. Incidentally, this is where you might find slaves listed by name.
