All Hurricanes discussion goes in this thread and any ensuing threads that may (hopefully) be necessary: http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=563703

This thread is for the other 15 teams.

Quarterfinals:

Eastern Conference

1. Boston Bruins
8. Montreal Canadiens

2. Washington Capitals
7. New York Rangers

3. New Jersey Devils
6. Carolina Hurricanes

4. Pittsburgh Penguins
5. Philadelphia Flyers

A rematch of last year's #1 and 8 with the teams swapped, and the B's Habs is always one of the great rivalries in hockey. The Battle of Pennsylvania should also be a pretty wild series. 7 of the 8 teams in the East are back from last year (Carolina replaced Ottawa).

Western Conference

1. San Jose Sharks
8. Anaheim Ducks

2. Detroit Red Wings
7. Columbus Blue Jackets

3. Vancouver Canucks
6. St. Louis Blues

4. Chicago Blackhawks
5. Calgary Flames

Only 4 teams returning from last year in the West. St. Louis and Chicago end playoff droughts, and Columbus is in for the first time ever. Two divisional matchups including a California series.

Dates, times, and TV schedule to be announced shortly. National TV coverage on NBC and Versus.

I'm really looking forward to the Washington vs New York games. The season series says it all:

Nov 8: at Capitals 3, Rangers 1
Dec 23: Capitals 5 at Rangers 4 (OT)
Jan 3: at Capitals 2, Rangers 1
Feb 11: at Rangers 5, Capitals 4 (SO)

Although Washington won 3 out of 4, the games were so close and the Rangers' stock is rising. Add that to the intensity of playing a playoff game in MSG and watch out.

Go Rangers!

I'd like nothing more than to see Avery get bounced without delay. However, I'm not sure Theodore can pull it off.

Is there any way to watch the games that aren't on national TV?

I'm in DC and want to watch the Canes but it doesn't look like I can until Game 6 (if they play it).

Eastern Conference
Quarterfinals
1. Bruins vs 8. Canadiens
Upset Potential: Very High. I almost feel as though this is the Eastern finals--whoever wins this series will almost certainly be going to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Bruins are, of course, trying to capitalize on the recent success of Boston sports teams. The Habs, on the other hand, have a lot riding on this year's postseason appearance. In addition to this being the 100th season, they are the only team to make at least one appearance in the SCF in every decade of their existence. So, if Montreal fails to make it back to the finals, the '00s will end that streak (that's my story about the end of the decade, and I'm sticking to it ). This will definitely go seven--and possibly, multiple overtimes in Game 7.

No. 2 Capitals vs. No. 7 Rangers
Upset Potential: Low. The Blueshirts may have re-upped with Torterella and Avery, but they're no match for the Caps.

No. 3 Devils vs. No. 6 Hurricanes
Upset Potential: Medium. Seven years ago, the seeding was reversed, and the Canes' win was considered an upset since the SE was the weakest division at the time. This time, I expect neither team to do much in the playoffs even this series should go seven.

No. 4 Penguins vs. No. 5 Flyers
Prediction: Flyers in six.

Semifinals
1. Bruins over 6. Hurricanes in six
5. Flyers over 2. Capitals in seven

Finals
1. Bruins over 5. Flyers in four

Western Conference
Quarterfinals
No. 1 Sharks vs. No. 8 Ducks
Upset Potential: High. The Ducks are still a tough team even if Giguerre has been figured out.

No. 2 Red Wings vs. No. 7 Blue Jackets
Upset Potential: Very Low. The Jackets will suffer from Happy to be Here Syndrome like the Thrashers did two years ago and will be gone quickly.

No. 3 Canucks vs. No. 6 Blues
Upset Potential: High. Maybe in exile, St. Louis has learned to be a bit tougher. The fact that they went a quarter century (prior to the lockout) only making one trip to the conference finals and none to the SCF was appalling for any team that had a long postseason streak.

No. 4 Blackhawks vs. No. 5 Flames
Prediction: Blackhawks in five.

Semifinals
1. Sharks over 4. Blackhawks in six
2. Red Wings over 3. Canucks in five

Finals
2. Red Wings over 1. Sharks in seven

Stanley Cup Finals
Bruins vs Red Wings
First all-Original Six Cup Final since 1979 should calm everyone at NBC who's concerned with NHL ratings. These finals will be smashmouth, and go the full seven as Hockeytown raises the Cup of Lord Stanley for a 12th time.

[Edited on April 15, 2009 at 4:09 PM. Reason : Bruins and Canes won on coin flips]

^please tell me that you're joking about the upset potential being VERY HIGH in the Boston-MTL series!? then that you think the B's would dispose of the Flyers in 4.

fuck it, tell me nearly all of your "analysis" is one big fucking joke.

If only the Rangers had a little more chutzpah, I'd say they'd take the Caps out in the first round. Theodore is going to sink Washington before long.

^^^ballsy there, taking 1 upset in a 4-5 matchup. nice work, Jay Bilas.

I do agree that Washington is hindered by Theodore, but also they don't pay enough attention to team defense sometimes.

Quote :
" In the first time of NHL Network U.S.’s history, it will broadcast a Stanley Cup Playoff game by airing live Game 2 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Conference Quarter-Final match-up between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Detroit Red Wings from Detroit on Saturday, April 18 @ 6pm ET.

Locally, Fox Sports Detroit and Fox Sports Ohio will broadcast this game live as previously scheduled. NHL Network will be blacked out in those local markets. "

I don't understand why they aren't going to SJ/ANA during the intermission, but I have center ice so it doesn't really matter all that much.

I just want the HD feed. It's bullshit that Extra innings gets the priority over Center Ice, apparently, for the HD feed.
