I've got an 02 530i (e39) and I'm trying to figure out how to take out the stereo so I can plug a cable into the back. 4/13/2009 5:45:57 PM |

Use a bright light to locate a 2mm allen screw inside the hole. (3) Engage a 2mm allen key and turn about 90 degrees. This will retract spring loaded tabs holding the MID. (4) While still holding the allen key twisted, gently pull out the MID" |
first result in google.
and here's some videos that are about the 3rd result. one of them will probably help http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to/video/how-to-install-a-dice-ipod-kit-dsp-adapter-in-a-bmw-e39-143449/

Removing the volume know and turning the 5-sided allen will remove the MID display. Can't recall right off the top of my head.......but the CD player or tape deck is held in either with the 5-sided allen or phillips screws. I haven't pulled one out in well over a year or two.
Not sure where else to get the 5-sided allen tool at, besides the dealer. Some later production cars actually used a normal 6-sided allen. If you have halfway decent vision, you will be able to tell by looking at it. 4/13/2009 10:22:23 PM |

If it has 6 sides you can use an allen or a torx. If its 5 sided, either the tool.....or get crafty. Good luck if its 5 sided with no tool though.
There isn't much tension on the screw. You turn it like 30 degrees or so and pull it towards you, and the MID comes right out. Don't need a tool to install it.......just snaps back in place. 4/15/2009 11:27:29 PM |
