Put headphones on and close your eyes. It's pretty relaxing.

im suprised no one has done this before, it seems like common sense to have two mics where the ears would be to get this effect

hope they do more

That was my first thought when he says, "ok now we're going to put a bag over your head." I was like, woah woah woah buddy, we won't be doing that.

that was amazing...i've never heard audio quite like that before... at first, i didn't think my headphoens were plugged in and the sound was actually coming out of the speakers on the computer

It would have been better if they just did the haircut without talking about it and how it all works the whole time. Part of making something creative is letting people experience it and understanding that some people will get it on different levels than others. This is why artists don't write an article to accompany each of their pieces describing the "what" and "why" of the piece.

I don't think it's really supposed to be an art piece, it's just a cool audio thingy. In fact, it's more likely that it was intended as a creative way to present a biological principle.

i'm pretty sure it's supposed to be an advertisement/demonstration for this algorithm.

[Edited on April 14, 2009 at 5:45 PM. Reason : maybe demonstration is a better word.]

^i dont think there is any algorithm
its just two mics where your ears would be

but did anyone else get dizzy after listening to it?

Dolby's been doing their 5.1 surround headphone thing for years. I even made a post about it almost 4 years ago.

There's a couple of gaming examples of the same type of technology on this page.

I think as a general rule, if a thread has made it to 28 posts without anyone saying they've seen it before you can probably just keep that "[old]" to yourself.

I remember something similar to this at Epcot Center.

They used the hairdryer in that one. Felt pretty real.

Haven't tried it with speakers, but I imagine it won't be nearly the same effect unless they're close to your head. Even then, the stereo separation sucks because they're not isolated from each other.

speakers, for me, did not offer the illusion of movement of the sound 360-degrees.

for me, speakers make the sound move in a plane, whereas, the headphones made it feel like the source of the sound was moving through space, if that makes any sense
