not really but

http://io9.com/5210651/man-grows-5-centimeter-tree-branch-in-his-lung

Remember when grandpa told you not to swallow those watermelon seeds? Well, he wasn't screwing around. Some poor sap from Russia just had a fir tree removed from his lung.

Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reports that the 28-year-old patient, Artyom Sidorkin, came to a hospital in the city of Izhevsk in Central Russia last week, complaining that he was experiencing chest pain and coughing up blood.

After submitting to an X-ray the doctors saw a lump in the patient's lung. After a biopsying the lump the doctors pulled out a 5 centimeter fir tree branch out of his lung, complete with needles.

"They told me my coughing blood was not caused by any disease," Sidorkin says. "It was the needles poking the capillaries. It really hurt a lot. But I never felt like I had an alien object inside of me."

The doctors suspect that Sidorkin inhaled a bud, which later grew into the tiny tree. Thus proving that the monsters from Treeple and Treevenge do exist and they are learning how to attack from the inside.

seeds / buds have enough "fuel" to allow them to grow without light for a short period

wtf is the bodily organ around the tree in the picture? Obviously they didn't take his lung out so why would it be in a different organ?

^ it looks like a lobe of lung. however, i call bullshit on this as evidenced by the following excellent and undeniable arguements:

Quote :
"Prof Chris Bolliger, pulmonologist at the University of Stellenbosch, said the X-ray that was showed and the tissue sample with the "tree" in it do not concur. Bolliger and Linegar said that plants can not show more density than bone on the X-ray."

If you look at the chest Xray (DaveOT can probably confirm this), it is total bullshit:

Quote :
"It also looks like the cutting was folded in to the lung tissue. If it grew there, it would have been woven into the tissue. "

Happy late april fools, bitches

I don't know anything about medicine or lungs or whatever, but can you really slice that much out of a lung and have the person be totally okay?

depends on pre-operative pulmonary function tests, but people with otherwise healthy lungs can have up to an entire lung removed (pneumonectomy) without any effect on breathing. i doubt you can be an olympic swimmer but for everyday normal stuff plenty of people are walking around with a lung or one or more lobes (lobectomy) removed. also common is the wedge resection, in which a sublobar piece of lung tissue is removed.

HOYVENGLAIVEN!

now how the fuck do you accidentally inhale a bud (not considering smoking bud). pollen, ok...but a whole bud?

now growth in the absence of light (to the length of 5cm=~2in) happens whether you want to accept it or not. don't you bury seeds to get plants going?

when i first saw the pic, it looked like the headline was gonna read something to where some guy was impaled by a tree, doctors remove tree, forget tiny piece in lung. whatever.

I'm no scientist, but I know that once the seed sprouts it has to find sunlight pretty quick or it's going to die. You can plant a seed 2' under the dirt and see how well it flourishes if you don't believe me. It's certainly not going to turn into a piece of a limb with green leaves and no roots.

no a sprout can grow without light it will just lack pigmentation (some seeds require sunlight to germinate, most do not)

eventually itlll die yes, but a seedling when it initially germinates isnt capable of creating its food through sunlight anyway, its relying on energy stores in the seed until it develops its first true photosynthetic leaves, only then does the plant become dependent on sunlight

if you plant a seed two feet under the dirt the only reason it doesnt survive is that it has depleted its energy stores before it could reach sunlight and develop leaves, the seed provided it is able to germinate without light, will still produce a shoot and roots
