Even if the story were true (I have no idea myself) I would suspect it would take a bit more than a bad day at work to bring a tenured professor to unemployment. He has won numerous accolades and is a highly respected member of the department.

well my friend told me he was fired (??) bc he was having a lot of issues with his ex-wife dying?... I don't know, just wanted to confirm if this was true or not -- especially after I had heard about him showing up at a review session wasted...

I hope he is ok though, he was a cool prof

ok someone told me the story last night

he showed up drunk to a review session and was being kinda belligerent and a couple of his students drove him home.

he didn't get fired, not sure if he's even in trouble but i seriously doubt it.

all i heard was he's going through some family troubles, dunno specifically, but he's a good guy and hopefully he'll be able to get through it.

I really like him, too, that's why I was said... He was lively and even though his tests were tough, I like how he had the give-away questions at the end of the test to lift your spirits, hah... like "who looks better in a tux, me or 50-cent?"

"If you haven't heard by now, someone turned Novak in for being drunk at a review session the other week. We all know that Novak loves his ethanol, but he's in trouble with the Chemistry Department right now because of it. Here's an email that I recently recieved from him after telling him that we want to help him out:

Monica et al.;

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I had to put my daughter into
a second round of 3 month rehab and then my (after reuniting with me)
wife's lung cancer came back after 4 years and they had to remove the
remainder of her right lung. With all this I had a very public and
very embarrassing meltdown.

I am not sure yet what they will try and do to me so I greatly
appreciate the offer of help if it comes to that.

bruce

I just wanted to have people aware of the situation and a way to contact everyone if he does need our help in any way. Please invite anyone that you know who would be willing to stick up for him if it comes to that... I'll keep you posted."

Somebody join the group and tell that chick to give the man some fucking privacy, he certainly deserves it

i'm all for a support group and all that, but don't think prying into his personal life is necessary

I talked to him about what happened and he said that he's had an incredibly hard semester dealing with family issues and basically just had a meltdown. He is still lecturing and seems to be doing a lot better since the review session.

he at least holds review sessions. Id much rather have a professor who comes in on his time off intoxicated to help us do better on exams then a professor who sits their ass at home sober

Considering he apparently cursed some students out and it was absolutely useless as a review session... no, coming in drunk was not more favourable than sitting at home sober. My roommate came back from that session infuriated because it was such a waste of time, and Novak decided to pretend it hadn't happened the day after. She actually had had real questions to ask him during that time.

I'm all for second chances, but comments like "I'm really disgusted that someone 'turned him in.'"? Really now?

^^if you knew him, you wouldn't be saying that.

there is not a professor at NCSU that is more dedicated to helping his students succeed. we had review sessions before every exam... he would stay late if you had questions... he'd spend as long as you needed in office hours... if you wanted help, he was more than willing to give it to you.

one review session that was less than desirable is not grounds for disciplinary action, especially given the fact that he's a tenured professor that is very highly respected in the department.

yes, your roommate may have not gotten everything out of that review session that she wanted, but that's one out of, oh, probably HUNDREDS of review sessions he's held over the years. i'm sure he would have been more than happy to answer her questions after class.

the man was having some major issues. he made a mistake. he's human. give him a break.

^Yes, he's a tenured professor, yes, he is obviously going through some bad times, and yes, I also agree that there should not be disciplinary action besides ensuring that the situation does not repeat itself. I still don't believe that there is any reason for someone to be "disgusted" for a student telling higher-ups when a respected professor comes in utterly trashed.

^^Pseudo-Canadian. I've lived in the US about half my life, so the "eh?" never fully developed. ):

I am more disgusted that people would post an e-mail about his private life on facebook.

As for telling his superiors in the departed I feel more like He is the most dedicated professor that I have had at NCSU. He goes far and beyond what is necessary to spend one on one time with his students, answer questions, answer e-mails, create review materials, and manages to comes in on sunday's or stays late to hold review sessions. At a university where I have been been appalled on more then one occasion by professors lack of consideration and unwillingness to assist students I think Dr. Novak's methods should be an example to other educators on how to treat and engage students. I can empathize with the people that were unfortunate to be in that session but he is a brilliant man and a great asset to the university. This is clearly an unusual and out of character occurrence so I'm surprised that some of the individuals there sought the need to report him when any reflection on their part would have lead them to the conclusion that something must be awry and it was very unlikely to occur again.

I failed the hell out of his class but he was an awesome teacher. His research probbably pulls so much money that he could do about anything. He may get a letter in his file, they expire in 6 months or a year, gotta have three to get fired. If anything get him some counseling to cope for now, it sounds like he is in a tough spot on several fronts.

I support Novak.
