I'm looking for a bricked 360 with either a RROD, an e74 error, or a bad disc drive (won't read/scratches discs). I've been thinking about offering a repair service around campus, but I'd like to practice on a 360 before I start charging people.
I can pick it up in the evening provided I've got an hour's notice. Let me know how much you want for the system. 4/15/2009 5:52:04 PM |

You may want to forget about the "E74 error" part of that service... 4/15/2009 8:51:18 PM |

I wouldn't be very smart if I was asking for in-warranty systems, now, would I? 4/15/2009 9:24:33 PM |

He's not, probably thinks he can fix them all with a few bolts and a towel. Let him learn the hard way, heh. 4/15/2009 11:28:23 PM |

Well, as I said, I've only been thinking about it, but as far as RROD repair goes, I can pick most of that stuff up at any hardware store. The only thing I can't get local is the opening tool, which I'll get because I mangled the hell out of my own system when I opened it with a flathead screwdriver.
For DVD drive repairs (read: replacement), I can't remember the site, but I found a place where I can get drives for $40. A lot better than the $80 I paid last year to replace the one in my own system.
I'll edit this post when I find the website again.

And yet again I'm reminded of why I so rarely post on TWW.
Anyway, it looks like 360 ready DVD drives are down across the board. I found a $35 drive just by googling it here:

If anyone's planning on doing it themselves, just make sure your 360 is out of warranty (only 1 year on the dvd drive), and you swap out the circuit board on the DVD drive before you try to drop one of these in.4/15/2009 11:52:41 PM |

I'm a professional technician. I've been doing repairs on Xbox 360 (and orginal, etc) systems for a good 5-6 years now. There was a time when I'd do 15-20 in a week. Now I still do quite a few, but even with infrared BGA rework equipment the success ratio is only around 90%, and that simply isn't good enough to be worth my time with as little as the repair charge is now.
If you think you can do it all with equipment from a hardware store, you're an idiot. If you can't even manage to open a 360 case without a special tool you're a monkey AND an idiot, and I'd never let you near anything sensitive or electronic. 4/16/2009 1:28:19 AM |

Well aren't we special?
wwwebsurfer asked where I was getting parts, and I assumed he meant the actual hardware I would use up on each repair, which, for RROD's is mostly washers and screws. If I go through with this, of course I'll order a case opener. I've got most of the tools I need already.
Get off your high horse. It's an Xbox, not the Hadron Collider. I'm looking to make a little cash on the side, not take over the world.

Anyone who has had their xbox for less than three years can still send their xbox to be repaired for free at microsoft.com due to extended warranties 4/16/2009 3:21:36 AM |

^I'd think twice about giving fregac anything else of mine to repair. I asked him to do a reflow on an e74 xbox I had and be said it'd just be a couple days. For two weeks he completely ignored every attempt I had made to get in touch with him. Had to drive out to his house just to determine he hadn't even looked at it yet. Against my better judgement I decided to let him have another couple of days to work on it. Big mistake. Almost another two weeks later- big surprise- still no word from him. Complete waste of a month to be right back at square one. He may be good technically but he certainly doesn't act professional.
As far as fixing red ring boxes it's almost impossible to make money doing it, there's just too many variables to consider. It's not easy to keep them fixed for an extended period of time.

I wish I could say that wasn't the whole story but it is. I didn't have enough interaction with the guy for there to be more to the story. I made several attempts to contact him and get an update on the repairs and I literally had to drive to his house twice just to get him to talk to me. Based on everyone elses experiences and his reputation I was quite surprised with how things turned out. 4/18/2009 4:49:33 PM |

^ Oh, I'd hurt my neck pretty badly and was all but out of commission for a couple weeks recuperating. Thought I explained it to you? (maybe not though, I was on some serious painkillers so I was a tad wonky at the time) 4/18/2009 8:38:31 PM |
