Whats gets my goat is that 95% of the suburban pussies that I've met from Maryland all claim that they come from "right outside DC".

huntersville is only acceptable because the outskirts barely blend in and before you know it you are in what's considered huntersville. the concord/charlotte change is much more recognized b/c of the 29/speedway 85/concord mills. But still, huntersville-cornelius =/= charlotte.

But i can agree with this thread, being from concord. If i have to explain from an out of towner where i'm from i'll say charlotte just to make it easier. But to anyone that's spent time in NC i'll say concord.

I'm from Lake Norman but when I get a blank stare I say Charlotte.

But yeah if I'm from Concord (used to live there, went to Harrisburg Elem.) and I'm talking to someone not from the area, I'm just gonna say Charlotte. The entire state will be a Charlotte annex before long anyway.

if you're well outside Charlotte when you're having a conversation...like in Raleigh for example, and somebody asks where you're from and you're from Mooresville or Rock Hill or something, I guess you can say Charlotte, because you're assuming the person might not know exactly where Mooresville or Rock Hill are

But being from Charlotte myself, and being fully aware of Mooresville, Rock Hill, Concord, etc...I hate that shit

exactly, it's just a matter of providing the geographic resolution most relevant to the context. missing the forest for all the trees, and such.

speaking of annexation i found this interesting

Quote :
"Charlotte cannot annex an area already incorporated into another local municipality. Charlotte and the four towns in Mecklenburg County with which Charlotte shares boundaries (Mint Hill, Matthews, Pineville, and Huntersville) have mutually agreed upon boundaries - called "spheres of influence" - beyond which each entity has agreed not to annex. One municipality cannot annex property within another's sphere of influence. Therefore, no unincorporated area of Mecklenburg County is eligible to be annexed by more than one Mecklenburg municipality. In addition, the City of Charlotte has annexation agreements with the towns of Weddington, Stallings, Marvin, Concord, Midland, and Harrisburg (all outside of Mecklenburg County) under which the City has agreed not to annex property in Union and Cabarrus Counties (where these towns are located). Those municipalities have also agreed not to annex property in Mecklenburg County within Charlotte's sphere of influence. "

If they know the area:
"I'm from harrisburg"

If they only sort of know the area:
"I'm from concord"

If they're clueless:
"I'm from charlotte"

It's amazing to me how many people nationally look at you with a blank face when you say you're from Charlotte

Its a big city with 2 major sports teams...I shouldn't have to qualify it by saying Charlotte, North Carolina

I grew up in Plaza Midwood and hung out in Myers Park, Elizabeth, Dilworth, downtown, southpark, and NoDa area, etc. I consider myself from Charlotte.

Then i meet people at State who are "from Charlotte", and even from areas like South Park but have NEVER been to any interesting areas in Charlotte. I can't imagine how all these people grew up and never went anywhere interesting in Charlotte. I mean yeah they've been to Concord Mills, South Park, Carolina Place, Verizon Amphitheater, and MAYBE Discovery Place.

But i mention any local restaurant/venue/museum and they're like, "what? We have things like that in Charlotte?"

I guess there are really people out there who grow up in a semi-big city and spend their younger years going to concord mills, going to concerts at Verizon, and going to their local Red Robin for burgers. Just seems so depressing to me.

See i can understand if people live outside of Charlotte and how that relates to not actually experiencing what Charlotte has to offer, but on the other hand i had plenty of high school friends who were from all around the area (even concord/way out) and they were simply never at home because they were always hanging around the city. Of course i went to a 100% magnet school so the students were from all over Charlotte. Guess it wasn't your typical high school. We used to skip 8th period to go get sweet potato fries at the Penguin, and as long as we brought our security guard some left overs we could get back into the gate.

^i'm not hating on suburban normalcy, i'm just saying it's harder to be locally cultured if you live in the suburbs, but then again i had plenty of friends who WERE from the suburbs and simply never were home except at night.

^^Indeed. There's SOOOOO much construction in downtown Charlotte. Aside from the new Wachovia building, there's the Nascar Hall of Fame, the New African American Cultural center, and the new Bechtler Museum of Art (http://designcharlotte.org/2008/07/08/bechtler-art-museum-progress/).

Charlotte downtown is really coming along. Now with possible new light rail out to the university, things will get crazy.

Bechtler Museum

Nascar Hall of Fame

New Wachovia tower

African American Cultural Center

Charlotte's really turning into a real city.
