Sorry, but this article is fucking ridiculous. I actually think he's a good writer time to time but ye gods is he trapped in a different century or what?

As crazy as this guy sounds, I can relate with his frustration. I'm tired of seeing jeans and t-shirts at the symphony, or at a nice, upscale restaurant.

^ Well I understand that, but any nice resturant like that shouldn't seat you without a dress code. If there is no dress code then I don't see what's wrong with bustin up in there with jeans.

Again, I'm not sure this is really 'soap box' material but since George Will is usually a political commentator I figured I would put it here. It just seems really old fashioned and a bit elitist to me. I mean this may make me oblivious to inherent social rules but to me anyone who can seriously judge another person based on the cosmetics of which kind of material they prefer to put over their legs is kind of a fucking idiot.

I agree with him that white collar folk wearing expensive, pre-distressed denim is pretty disingenuous but otherwise I think it's pretty sad to pile on a type of pants that is popular for a reason - they're extremely durable, resist the elements to a degree, and are very comfortable. And besides, I have a hard time taking fashion advice from a guy that looks like this...

George Will is snob. Not everyone wants to wear golf slacks.

^^^ I'm not frustrated with restaurants who dont apply a dress code. I'm frustrated with people who only wear jeans when they can't wear sweatpants, and only wear khakis or slacks when they're forced to.

I don't really expect many folks to relate with me on this.

WTF is wrong with khakis to most people?

I rarely wear jeans, and for a while I didn't even own a pair. Yes, they're very ubiquitous, but that doesn't mean you're obligated to copy. And pants are fucking pants. It makes just as little sense for someone to get their panties up in a wad b/c someone else is wearing a kind of fabric as it does for someone to only wear slacks when forced to.

Both are examples of someone taking fabric personally. Both the people who wear jeans to everything and the people who complain about that are anchoring themselves to some perceived fashion 'norms'.

IMO, such norms shouldn't be considered to exist. Our culture is not as easy to define now as it was in the 50s. No one gets power to decide what goes and doesn't go.

Wear pants based on the merits of the pants.
Don't complain about what someone else is wearing.

^^Because it makes me look bad if I tell my girl I'm taking her to a nice place and we end up sitting next to some dude who looks like he just finished digging a hole. I'm probably just too poor.

if you really did take her to a nice place, there would be no one there who would look like that.

Good thing I'm too poor for this article to apply to me. Incidentally, I do not own jeans at this time.

A ball cap with a suit? What a disgrace. If Fred Astaire would not have worn it, don't wear it.

What? I wear jeans (clean, ironed jeans) because they're comfortable and they don't show dirt. I usually pair them with a collared shirt and casual leather shoes (my favorite are currently Clark's Desert Treks). I'm not aiming to look slovenly or trashy. I do wear a baseball hat though, just because 10 years in uniform make me feel extremely uncomfortable outside without a hat, and I don't feel I'm old enough to pull off a fedora style hat.

Comma, however,

I can emphasize with Will's aggravation with the sorry state of dress. It seems that a lot of people have forgotten how to age gracefully in their attire. Oh well. There is something to be said for curmudgeons once in a while.

He's just bitching against change like everybody else.

I tend to wear jeans even at work because I go out into the field and prefer not to be wearing nancy boy khakis when I am doing *insert activity which will get you dirty in two seconds here*.

if i rolled up in a powdered wig and a cape to a meeting (proper attire for a 18th century fop attending a "serious function"), i'd be hauled off to the loony bin

but thank the lord... in the year 2000, we'll all be wearing color-coded jumpsuits anyways, so all this tie crap's going out the window
