I'm so glad someone else remembers this movie! Whenever the conversation in a group turns to childhood movies, I always suggest this and people look at me weird as hell. The way his hair grew during class always freaked me out way more than the slave children

that movie freaked me the fuck out. I don't remember the whole thing, but there are certain scenes that stick in my head.

as i recall..... there was an old scary/haunted house, right? Kids went in it, and got so scared one of them lost his hair? And some old witch gave them a formula that involved a lot of crushed bugs and p-butter to regrow his hair.

I was young enough enough when I watched it that I didn't understand the scene when they were putting it on his head, then he got a devious look in his eye and looked down at his pants. Then the next day, it showed hair coming out from the end of his jeans since it was growing so fast. I didn't understand that - i remember thinking "why would he put it on his feet?"

from memory:

Goes in haunted house, gets scared.
Wakes up the next morning, sees a reflection of himself in the toaster. he's totally bald. freaks out.
gets a wig, glues it on. He gets in a fight with a bully who pulls on his hair, and much to the bully's surprise, it comes off, making him laugh and laugh and all the people watching are laughing the kid runs away crying.
Somehow he finds an old lady who gives him a recipe with dead houseflies and peanut butter. He regrows his hair and grows himself some pubes in the meantime. His hair grows really fast and doesn't stop growing.

around here my memory gets fuzzy.

Somehow the evil neighborhood villain gets a hold of his hair clippings and makes paint brushes out of them. The paint brushes are magical and create "living" paintings (really easily too, just brush back and forth in broad strokes and the brush makes a perfectly detailed, realistic painting). Somehow this evil dude traps poor little charlie in a sweatshop of sorts. The kid has to escape, but the bad man sleeps with a pretty weak security system: fishing line (or maybe long pieces of hair - either way, very thin and practically invisible) tied from his fingers to the opposite wall of his room. If anyone tried to escape, they would trip on one of the lines and wake him up.
One of the other kids in the sweatshop has the bright idea to figure out where the security lines are by hanging a ribbon off the end of a stick and holding it out in front of them. They escape, something happens, something happens, maybe the bad guy gets trapped inside one of his own paintings, everybody lives happily ever after. Perhaps the bad guy gets trapped in a painting of the scary house that scared the hair off charlie in the first place.

weird fucking movie.

now to read the previous links and see how close i was...
