Avery used to be a great agitator...now he's just a dick who takes dumb penalties. The look on Torts' face after Avery punched Varlamov told the whole story.

Speaking of Varlamov, though, the kid's playing great and has energized the whole team. The Rangers came out flat last night but he continued making stops here and there and they have a ton of confidence in him right now, which is paying off in how they break out and move the puck.

Also, kudos to Ovie last night for that crazy awesome backcheck.

Varlamov has surrendered a single goal and none at all on MSG ice. The Ovechkin line has its legs. Avery is off the chain but Torts probably won't bench him, which means more penalties. Unless the Rags can come out and get two quick ones in Game 4, they're headed back to DC 2-2.

If you're taking more penalties than you're drawing, you've failed as an agitator.

It's especially applicable in Avery's case, because he's planted doubt in officials' minds. When they see someone take a shot at him, they assume it's warranted and are calling retaliatory penalties less often in cases involving Avery.

Avery's done a great job drawing penalties every since he got back to the Rangers; you really have absolutely no idea what you're talking about here.

The refing in last night's game in the second period was extraordinarily ticky-tack (on both sides) and it's not as though Avery's antics were what cost the Rangers the game.

Just as Darcy Tucker outlived his usefulness as an agitator in Toronto, Sean Avery has outlived his usefulness as an agitator anywhere. He's a good player, but he's too stupid for his own good. Who's dumb enough to punch a goaltender while being held by a ref, especially when you've already hit him once and he didn't retaliate? BTW, that's another indication that Varlamov is completely zoned in on the puck.

Torts makes Avery sit on the end of the bench. If he's the coach of the Rangers next year, Avery will not be a Ranger. That's all I'm saying.

Unless you mean that Torts is going to bench him, in which case I'll point out he's the only Rangers who skated with any intensity during the third period and most certainly the only one who still cared after the Rangers went down 3-0.

I've watched about half a dozen Ranger games since he came back, and they've been hit or miss as to whether Avery has been effective or been more trouble than he's worth. He used to pick his spots like the pussy that every good agitator is, but lately he's been going after guys he can't rattle, which is just stupid.

I loved Avery in LA. He filled his role well in his first Rangers stint. Now, however, he's pulling the same shit he did in Dallas and it's working less and less often. He could play like a less-skilled Iginla and pour in plenty of points, but he can't turn off the stupid side of his brain. Some agitators learn to play within themselves, or adapt their roles to be more physical because the picking of spots was a tactical choice, not an ingrained one. Over time, I've come to believe that Avery's choice of role isn't tactical, but because he doesn't have what it takes to be a banger.
