My girlfriend and I took my dog to Lake Johnson today since the weather was fairly nice. We started riding around on the paddle boats. Got the boat pretty close to the ducks so that Kobe (my dog) could get a close up view. Anyway, after we all had our fill of the ducks we started off down the perimeter of the lake. Everything was going fine. Then Kobe wanted to set at the front of the boat. No problem really. Then he tried to start drinking from the lake and that is when all the trouble started.

He slipped and fell in the water. He is only 11 months old. So I didn't have him last year around this time to know if he could swim or not. He fell in the water and then disappeared from sight. So I immediately thought he was sinking. I tore my life jacket off and jumped in the water and started frantically swimming under the water trying to see. I did this for about a minute or two. Meanwhile, my girlfriend was still on the boat looking around as best she could. The boat started drifting away from me at a pretty decent clip. So after repeatedly going diving as far down as I could to look for him I got that sinking feeling and started to realize what was going on. He had drowned.

I told my girlfriend to bring the paddle boat back to me. She started kicking and then all of a sudden Kobe's head appeared out from under the boat. I'm guessing there is a section under the boat that has enough space for a beagle to stick his head in for air. The prop on the paddle boat cut his paws and made him start swimming out from under the boat. Dana screamed and jumped in the water and grabbed him and held on to him until I go back over to the paddle boat and could climb up to get them in.

It was a pretty crazy time. You wouldn't even know anything happened to him. He is back to normal chasing his tail and running around like an idiot. lol now I have to go to the store and get a new phone. But that is a pretty small price to pay to have my dog alive.

Your dog can swim, he didn't almost die.

In reality, he probably wasn't anywhere near dying.

I'm glad he can swim though.

My dog had a bad incident with ice water one time. I wasn't there, but the dog (Annabelle), my Dad, and my Mom were out at these boat docks checking out the freezing weather. The water had frozen over and either the dog was walking along the dock and slipped off randomly and crashed through the ice. My dad, fortunately, was immediately able to just reach down and grab her by the base of her tail and her collar. Her tail still has a funny kink in it, but she's just fine now.

She absolutely hates docks and this wooden stair case we have at home that shifts around though

He is pretty good to go now. The only thing wrong with him at this point is the cut on his hind leg. The one on the front paw does not seem to be bothering him. Anyway, last night I noticed his leg was bleeding as we were laying on the couch. Looking closer revealed he had been chewing at it by how the hair was all moist and messy. So when he was to tired to do anything about it I cleaned it up, put anitibiotic on it, wrapped it in gauze (sp), and then taped the entire thing up. It made it until about noon today until he chewed the gauze and stuff off. At least the antiobiotic had a good 12 hours to work itself in to the cut.

I thought that dogs swim instinctively?

Anyways, there is this antibiotic stuff you can get for dogs that tastes really sour, so when they try and lick or gnaw around the area it will stop them.

you don't own a dog do you?

he's probably invested far more than that in vet bills, etc if the dog's at 11 mos. old.

No shit. I did stand up and look around. Do you think my eyes were closed as I was unlatching the 3 clips on the life jacket? I also am not sure that all dogs are able to swim. It seems like English Bulldogs and Basset Hounds would have a tough time. lol look at them

glad your dog is OK. i saw this same thing happen to someone else at that lake, only their dog drowned it was so sad - i think about ten people jumped in the lake to try to help, but to no avail. i can't imagine it's easy to see under water there

some dogs can't swim. not that they lack the physical ability or instinct...they just don't have the bodies for it.

see ^^

and scottish terriers can't swim either. though I haven't tossed mine in a lake to see.

why are you going to take a puppy out on a paddleboat in the middle of a lake if you don't know if he can swim.

Well my thought was if he fell off I would be able to grab him. I didn't anticipate him immediately going under the boat. It would be like taking your kid to the deep end of the pool without floaties. You intend to be there just incase he can't swim without the floaties. Then you take them off and he immediately gets sucked into one of the filters.
