I'm wondering if there's anything special to do, because apparently, our vet was supposed to give us some paperwork regarding the how, when and what of things like this (but didn't), and the vet school said only 'nothing but water after midnight. We'll send you some paperwork to bring with' (but we haven't gotten it, if they did send it)

He's going to soft tissue, and may be facing an amputation. My guess is tomorrow is a consult, and depending on the options, treatment?
(A large ulcer/tumor on bony lower leg that won't heal. May never heal. Our vet keeps talking about lasers; amputation seems like the most logical next step)

sounds like your vet has a few screws loose and needs to stop taking those horse painkillers...

Is it an ulcer or a tumor? Aputation for an ulcer is rediculous. Aputation for a tumor seems reasonable.

It's open like an ulcer.
It grows like a tumor.

My wife is a pathology resident at the vet school. If she goes in tomorrow I'll ask herto keep an eye out for the case.

Everything's good, considering.
They found the heart murmur we already knew about.
They think they can do surgery to mostly close the wound, and aftercare will be what we've been doing already (changing bandages), and they think it'll heal almost completely over.
They found a lump in his abdomen that we knew nothing of It hurts him when they palpate it.
The lymph node on the leg with the tumor/sore/ulcer is swollen, so they're biopsying both that and some tissue from the sore on his leg. They did an ultrasound of his belly yesterday. I've heard nothing further about that.

He has surgery today.

Nah.
He's a cocker spaniel, and they're prone to (among other things) skin problems. This dog has crazy amounts of wart-like growths. They grow, they burst, and all is well...if he can't scratch or lick at it after it ruptures.

i didnt think that the vet school took patients. they told me to fuck off when i called late one night when terpball was my roomate and not home, and his dog got hurt...

unless, of course, its a big time alum who donates to the school.... like the story about the guy who flew his horse(?) in on his helicopter, or something like that

He had surgery Friday. He had some instances of arrythmia during surgery that scared them, but because they anticipated this, everything turned out okay.
He spent Friday night in the doggy ICU, and he came home today.

The wound has been closed to about the size of a nickel, and the vet school said we can expect it to heal completely.

My aunt had a cocker spaniel that had similar issues. If I'm not mistaken that is caused by grass seed working its way into the skin; pretty odd. They had surgery done to remove the first two that happened before they realized it was not a big deal and since then the progress just like you said.
