never had a problem connecting until today...

using vpnc going to a cisco concatenator. it's usually really good at traversing whatever you throw at it... but considering the NCSU SSID is wide open AND it's a public IP, i'd think this would have even less trouble... tried both the built-in TCP traversal stuff as well as the manual UDP configuration, and nothing - the concatenator drops the connection as soon as i connect.

just tried it via a hardline and it connected fine.

anyone else seeing weird stuff like this?

VPN im pretty sure is allowed on Nomad. I know tis allowed now on NCSU-Guest (idea is if you are doing something wrong, its on the vpn endpoint and not the university.)

Try it on Guest, see if it works then, if it dont, Id put a case in on it.

Evan, where were you at? Ive been in the library all day, and having fun connecting to all sorts of stuff, http, ssh, different IM protocols. The APs all over campus are getting slammed with everyone studying.

Dumb question, you tried authenticating through whatever the nomad login page is these days? No matter what VPN solution you use, it won't go anywhere if there's a "click to accept terms and conditions" in a hotel or the nomad login page blocking it. Your network will route the traffic to nowhere until you authenticate through whatever the front-door mechanism is.

Some VPN solutions do have auto-proxy authentication (if that's what nomad is). Otherwise, will have to be a manual process everytime, THEN fire up the VPN solution.

my MAC is in a nomad registration container so i don't have to auth. (p.s. what you're referring to is called a captive portal authentication system)

also, lol at concatenator... i meant concentrator... didn't catch that until now

So you have connectivity issues via wifi one day out of the tons you've used it and that spurred you to make a thread?

Doesn't NCSU have tech help you could contact about this, or did you just want to brandish your leet knowledge of vpn's?

i made a thread to see if anyone else was experiencing the same problem, nimrod. it helps to know if the problem is with your equipment or is a network issue. i didn't see anything about it on sysnews... so i went to, you know, that place that has a lot of technically oriented people that are associated with NCSU (aka Tech Talk).

it turns out they most likely were, considering the network was getting slammed due to it being exam week, as Master_Yoda pointed out.

Sorry for suggesting you should ask the source rather then rely on anecdotal evidence.

i used to work for ITD at NCSU - the help desk wouldn't be able to tell me anything more than what was on sysnews... considering that they're usually the ones that post things on sysnews to start with...

SandSanta, evan is correct. I currently work for ITECS. They would have said its a heavy load issue. That and it would have taken 2 days to get a reply...

no, haha, that's what makes it even more ridiculous (well, i guess it could be... as in the concatenation operator)

i'm not sure what made me spell "concentrator" like that... maybe it was the lack of sleep
