T-Dub straw poll. I'm hoping to go to Europe this summer for the first time. Never been. Not looking to do the whole train thing (this time), so just looking to see where you people have been/would go.

Cost is not a factor getting there, but once I'm there I'm not looking to stay in The Ritz.

^^ Woops. Only 5-7 days. I know the longer the better, but I can get there for free or almost free, yet can't take off for too long, so I'm only looking for a one city/region ordeal.

If you had to recommend one or two of those, which would it be and why?

i was there for longer but message_topic.aspx?topic=542852 i'd recommend paris and london still - although 5 days isn't enough to appreciate both - 7 isn't either but it's closer

Rome:
can't really say what is already obvious...you've got the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Forum, Trevi Fountain, Vatican City

Venice:
We stayed in Jesolo, not sure if this was because i was with a big tour group and trying to deal with luggage on the water taxis over to Venice would have been a pain or what. can't remember exactly how far it was from the dock (where the water taxis stop to go over to Venice)
Venice was just cool to go to, we saw a glass-blowing demonstration where a guy turned a blob of molten glass into a pretty damn good horse in like 10 seconds...we walked through the bridge of sighs, took a gondola ride, saint mark's square was pretty cool to go to

i'd love to go back one day

Yeah I was thinking of Paris and Rome as definite possibilities. Also, Amsterdam or maybe somewhere in Spain. Maybe Barcelona, Valencia or Madrid. Anyone been there?

Thanks for the link Omar, I'll check out the thread.

Venice is fantastic, I ended up staying a weekend in a Venetian hotel, a few blocks from the big courtyard (which had great restaurant bands at night)

but he said Europe, not Italy

honestly I'd recommend the train thing if you could make it two weeks instead, you get some great great scenery traveling through the Swiss Alps if you're going between France/Switzerland/Italy area

also with the eurorail pass you could grab rides all over France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, etc

if you want the british isles that's a separate cost for either ferry/chunnel and they have their own 'britrail' pass if you want it

Ireland's the next on my list for sure

[Edited on April 30, 2009 at 11:38 PM. Reason : ^good call on Spain, hadn't even thought about that]

I'd second Amsterdam and would potentially add Antwerp depending on what you're into

barcelona and madrid are both worthwhile destinations, although madrid is hot as shit in the summer; valencia is a nice city but not particularly memorable

^^^Yeah, I definitely want to do the train thing eventually, but I won't have the time this year. I'm figuring 5-7 days in one city/country won't be too bad.

Which city has the best nightlife? I always wanted to go to Montparnasse in Paris. Is it still ballin' like it was when Hemingway was running that shit?

Did the whole backpacking Europe thing back in September/October.

Barcelona was easily my favorite city. Crazy Gaudi architecture, great open market, funky/cool night scene, delicious food. Also have some cool little day-trips out to a close island and I believe they have beaches too (that I wasn't able to make it to).

My vote: Barcelona.

I planned a euro trip this summer too and I found through orbitz and hotels.com and other similar sites hotels at 5-star establishments were actually very inexpensive. $80-150/night

my trip includes Berlin, Prague, Munich, Lausanne (for the Tour de France), Paris, and London. It came out to about $940 per person (split between two people) for the hotels which for a 2 week trip is really not bad.

Out of amsterdam, germany (mostly the southern half), Paris and Belgium, the Bavaria region of Germany was my favorite with Amsterdam second.

Wasn't a big fan of Paris, but I'm not really into the big cities.

Good feedback, thanks.

I think Barcelona and Rome are front runners now. But still pretty open to ideas.
