Looking for a good mmorpg to mess around with, ideally one of the free online ones with an option to pay, those are usually pretty decent. I'd prefer something that doesn't require grouping/raiding. 5/1/2009 7:06:41 PM |

While I enjoy mmorpgs for things like raiding, grouping and such I'm not looking for one in that sense. I had my fill of spending countless hours raiding and grouping, but I'd like something that I can pick up for a shorter period of time and play by myself, and not be limited to grouping/raiding. The reason I do not want a single player game is due to the fact that I would still like some elements of an mmorpg, such as the economy. 5/1/2009 7:47:11 PM |

to be fair, wow really was one of the more solo-oriented mmo's. no mmo is going to be all that easy to camp decent mobs at a higher level in any real enjoyable way. at least in wow you could dick around and get some rares by chance, go and pk some people, or craft. 5/1/2009 7:50:15 PM |

If you want a game you can pick up quick and put down play Team Fortress 2. Just find a server with people you like.
If you are a retard and a FPS is to hard for you, then WoW is your best bet.
EvE......not so much
EQ.....you have to group EQ2 have to group Star Wars Galaxy......oh wait Planet Side....have to group
I can understand wanting to play a game where your effort shows in your character that you keep. TF2 all your effort just makes you a little better and you have nothing to show for it. And don't talk about achievements. Those are like winning toothpicks. 5/1/2009 8:03:40 PM |

why bother with an mmorpg if you don't want to play with others? why not just buy elder scrolls or something that just plays the same way but is single player? 5/2/2009 4:22:24 PM |

seriously. paying a subscription for an mmorpg only makes sense if you're going to take full advantage of the experience. if not, why not just get a good single player? oblivion is one hell of a game and the world is so huge you might as well think it is an mmo.5/2/2009 5:33:02 PM |

I cant answer the OP because I haven't found a game like this since I stopped playing Asherons Call 8 years ago (haven't exactly searched hard, tried EQ and WOW).
The point of playing an MMO while mostly soloing is: 1. Active marketplaces 2. PK'ing 3. Evolving world 4. Lively board communities 5. All of the other reasons to group in a MMO but only when you want to.
Basically all of the reasons anyone would play an MMO with the added ability to play single player style when you want. 5/4/2009 4:02:35 PM |

You can try darkfall online, it was designed to mimic the solo-mmo style of Ultima Online. I just finished playing it for a month and it was buggy but very fun. It has Full Looting enabled with little to no protection outside of NPC cities. It's basically Ultima Online with slightly better graphics and much more potential, but if you want to play it you have to buy it online and can only play on the european servers. I was running it on high resolution on my hdtv and it looked much better than WoW. The huge downside is, although I can solo the game easily, everytime I step outside of the town guards, I could get ganked and lose everything on my character. So basically the entire strategy of the game is to amass enough wealth so when you do die, everything can be easily replaced. You can own your own home, but your home can be destroyed if a large enough guild has enough money to seige your house. Realistically, very few people have the capital or the desire to waste all of their time and organization on your shitty little house, but nothing is safe. The whole game is designed around getting an adrenaline rush once you leave the guards protection. This game is not for everyone, because it's completely free will and designed for people that hate carebears and like getting their blood pumping. Darkfall online is supposed to be released in the US once they have fixed all of the bugs, which may take a year or more to do. Also, it's the only mmo that I know of that has mounted combat.

ok true enough. but then he mentions something like diablo.... i mean, really? he's probably better off with dungeon siege 2 and such...
but yeah you can play eve online solo, but it's gonna be pretty dull (missions, even faction missions, and solo pvp are all available)
D&D online, but gonna take you a loooong time
elder scrolls as mentioned, several expansions for this as well...

find something rated pretty well, check it out, play if interested.
imho the best part of any multiplayer game is small group play with friends (shit sometimes even random dudes (BF2)) but you know, that's just how i roll 5/4/2009 4:09:47 PM |

You can pick just about any MMO and play PvE and be perfectly content solo the whole way to max level.
Games that are terrible and should not be played: Runescape, WAR, Darkfall, Matrix Online, Star Wars anything.
Games that are really old but still decent: UO, AO, Diablo 2.
Guild Wars is ok, but it focuses on group PvP and team based missions...it can be soloed easily but thats not its focus
games you do not want to solo in. Eve, Wow/AoC/WAR pvp servers.
My suggestions. Wow, AoC, Guild Wars, Fallen Earth(still in Beta, but looks alright) 5/5/2009 6:01:16 PM |

EvE has some very good solo moments but if you get into deep you're talking about having no social life whatsoever. One of best things about EvE is its in game browser and radio station. Great for wasting time, if you have it.
Heres the old hyperion skiffin around
taranis
Ultima Online falls into the same catagory, you can pretty much manipulate so many factors in the game its ridiculous. UO hybrid free shard is still running strong I think. 5/5/2009 11:39:25 PM |

For real, before AOS the game had everything right sans trammel
It's also the only game ever where the maker of the game got pked by his own towns people
fire fielded his ass
funniest thing about old UO, you would see fucking stun mages running around with no clothes with the exception of one "blessed" clothing item (be it gloves or a bandanna) just running shit.
When you finally kill them they would have a few regs, a couple potions and maybe a dagger on them.
I miss those days
