Does the PS3 play Divx files off a DVD? Any other formats?

you can stream it from a media server (WMP, TVersity, etc.) and use your PS3 remote

different question about tversity, i have it running wired through to my ps3 one router and everything works great, problem is i want to use a wireless router as a hub connected to the main router.

the pattern works like this Cable > modem > linksys router > computer - wireless router > ps3

with the ps3 plugged into the ports of the wireless router (the wireless for some reason disagrees with the ps3).

now the issue is i can't resolve the tversity media server on the ps3 when it's set up like above, of course it works fine if i unplug the wireless router and plug the ps3 directly into the linksys router.

What wireless router is it? Some of them are still a bitch with NAT even if you disable DHCP and set the IP to a static private in router 1's subnet. (Conspiracy says this is because most companies charge more for an access point than they do for a router)

if it's compatible--DDWRT is great for turning the device into a true wireless bridge.

Also, make sure that when you make the changes you're feeding Router 2 through one of the switched ports and *not* the WAN/Uplink/Internet port.

PS: It looks like I slightly misread your intentions, but the ideas are all still mostly the same. You'll end up getting more functionality if it's DDWRT compatible -- maybe even use of your uplink port.

everything is wired, the wireless router is only used for wireless laptops pretty much, so trying to get that set up as a hub/access point is ideal...

ill play with it some when i get home...

It can play them off of a USB drive too. So if you don't want to waste a DVD, put it on a USB stick and play it that way. I don't remember if the current units have the flash card readers, but you can play them directly from a flash card too.

ok...so I have about 50 movies on my External HDD. All are DVD rips in AVI file format.

So I can take one and copy it to my thumbdrive and plug that into the front of my ps3 and playback the movie no problem?

Can anyone confirm video quality?

this is great news, no more watching on my computer screen.

Sometimes the PS3 doesn't play certain rips. Just depends if a release group did it or some joe schmoe.

ok cool. Most of mine come from user aXXo on Demonoid who has a pretty stellar reputation.

I'll give his a try and see.




On a related/unrelated note..several of my most recent rips that i have downloaded have caused my DivX player to crash. They play perfectly fine on VLC or WMP, but for some reason force DivX to shut down. Any idea why? Would it be related to ^, thus these probably will not work on my ps3?

You should all be using this media server for playing stuff on your PS3,

It will literally play anything you throw at it, and it's smart about how it plays the file. If the PS3 can play it natively, it'll just stream it. If it needs to be remuxed into a different container (like an x264 MKV for example), it'll do that on the fly while maintaining the original video and audio stream. It will also transcode anything the PS3 can't play at all, again, all on the fly. You do have to have a relatively beefy PC to do all that without a hitch though. Stop using WMP, Tversity, Nero Home, or any of those other crappy media servers. This is the one to use if you have a PS3.

Tversity isn't that bad. PlayOn seemed to be decent back in the day when no one could stream hulu or youtube.

Do any of you guys download the 720 or 1080 high-def blu-ray rips that seem to be gaining popularity? Do these rips (roughly 8GB) transfer the true high definition picture and sound? Just wondering if they are worth the disk space.

i downloaded Wanted 1080p a while back and played it on my ps3

i dont even have an HDTV, just an old 20" and the picture was still better than a DVD
