Which types of onions are the best for different things? I always end up buying red onions for whatever reason, but are there guidelines about which onions should be used for which food?

What type do I use for onion rings?
Onion straws?
Salads?
Burgers?
Sandwiches?

What are the rules of thumb when it comes to buying a decent onion? Does size matter?

Red onion is spicier and more pungent.

Yellow onions (and even more so with vidalia) are milder and sweeter.

Personally, i like very thinly sliced red onion on salads, sandwiches, and burgers for the little bit of added spice and crunch, but they can be overpowering if over used.

Yellow and vidalias are better for frying and caramelizing due to their natural sweetness. (onion rings/straws, fajitas, philly steak, etc..)

I agree w/ Metal Red. I like Red Onions if you want them center stage like on top of a pizza or in a salad/burger. I much prefer caramelizing yellow/white/Vidalia onions.

I use sweet onions for pretty much everything that calls for onions. Except salad and other stuff where they aren't cooked, then I go with the red.

i agree with metalred. thinly sliced red onions are awesome on salads and burgers, sandwiches.

shallots are yummy (in a vinaigrette or sauteed like onions) as are green onions. i'll often use green onions/scallions in asian dishes, sometimes in the saute part and at the end. most think of it just as a garnish, but the fresh green onions add a nice taste at the end.

I don't like onions very much, but grilled onions are alright sometimes. Onion rings and tobacco onions are pretty tasty too.

I use frozen pearl onions for many soups, stews, chili, etc. Regular onions turn into stringy sheets of mush when slow cooked in soup, but pearl onions keep their shape and texture -- so you can actually bite down on them.

Yeah, this shouldn't have been moved. I reject the rule that all parody threads necessarily be moved to shit chat, regardless of how serious they are. In other words, if the "Unions" thread had not already been made, and this "Onions" thread was made (in the Lounge,) I think most people would've been like, "Oh... a serious onions thread -- I think I'll contribute..." BUT NO! The rule book says that this is a technically still a parody thread, so the mods ignore the fact that 85% of the posts are completely serious and appropriate Lounge material, and instead move it to shit chat to be wasted and forgotten. Good going mods, on a completely unnecessary thread move.
